After all, if you VUDU had said, "Hey we are working on it, and it should be in the next 2-3 months" I would of been content with that, but when I kept hearing it's coming soon, or it should be in the next release, you set that expectation high, and when you fail to deliverer on a perceived expectation, your bound to annoying people.
Uh, when did we say that storage was coming in the next release. The original Vudu press release says six months. And that was last October. Six months puts the time for release of that feature in the March/April time frame. I think that is setting the expectations pretty darn well.

We've been dropping hints and talking about the streaming HD for some time now. In fact, streaming HD was announced at CES. External storage wasn't.

Have we been reading the same forums is a good question as well because there has been VERY little talk about external storage and it has NEVER even been hinted that it was going to be part of 1.2. Please show me a post where someone at Vudu or one of the moderators or beta testers says that the release of external storage is imminent. I think we referred to the "6 month" notice equalling March or April more than once. And "soon" is a relative term meaning it's on the feature list to be implemented. Soon can mean 6 months as opposed to 12 months. I did promise that I would attempt to put some urgency to this issue and ask that the implementation time frame be moved up. I did that a few weeks ago. Now, why would I promise to do that if it was going to be in an imminent release of software that I'd obviously be beta testing at the time I made the promise to raise the issue?

I don't think it's incumbent upon Vudu or anyone that volunteers as a beta tester or a moderator to detail a list in advance of feature sets that are coming. In fact, we can't.

Why is it so awful to rent a movie you want to see? The viewing is instant so what's the big deal about downloading vs. having it on your box there for you. I understand the purchase only issue and yeah, that's a problem.

Your concerns are well heard and we've been pressing this issue internally to try to get it moved up. As stated, I have done that. But as I'm not a Vudu program manager and not even a Vudu employee my request is just that - a request. It helps to make requests like that, but obviously, there are people with more knowledge about the product than myself who are calling the shots about what needs to be done.

If JohnA stated that this would be in release 1.3, then it will be there. And that's the next major release. If Vudu follows the same course it has, you get a major release approximately every 2 months. 1.0 came out in early October. 1.1 came out in late November. 1.2 came out in late January. So if you apply the same metric, you could see 1.3 coming out in late March. This is NOT a promise or any sort of knowledge of schedule on my part. It could be earlier, it could be later than that. It's simply a guess based on what the track record has been.

Again, sit back with a latte or your favorite adult beverage and enjoy some HD rentals!

Either way, it doesn't matter at this point, what is done is done, and I'll just have to wait.
Read their patent (the PDF version has some nice diagrams) if you want to know why the 250GB drive is needed.

When you have two boxes on the same network and one box already has a specific title, if you purchased that title for the other box would it pull the content off the box on the same network?

It may or may not. I think Vudu is looking into the possibility of room to room streaming. I don't know where it is on the horizon or if the content owners would allow it, but it would make sense even if you have to re-rent/re-purchase the content.

I have made a suggestion during the beta testing to have the VUDU identify "closest" peers. There is some work being done in the p2p world for building "location" algorithms. Will VUDU adopt it? Only time will tell.

Cripe. I've been testing this thing for 11 months now and I've never read this until now. I'm printing it out as I type. Looks fascinating. Thanks for spurring us on!

If someone has 2+ boxes, wouldn't Vudu be able to determine that they belong to the same person since they would generally be tied to the same Vudu account? And if that happens, then heads and purchased/rented titles need to be downloaded only to one box which would later push updates to other boxes on the network via a much faster Ethernet connection?

I guess issues could arise if someone has multiple boxes in multiple locations, but that's when IP addresses could come in handy.

The VUDU is not that smart yet...each box is currently autonomous. I could see later as the VUDU base grows and there are more homes with multiple boxes they could implement something like that.

You mean my house with 5 Vudus isn't enough motivation. I'd be happy to beta test the functionality.

Yes but your are unique and I don't know where a feature like this would be in the "priority" queue.

Thank aaronwt for finding the patent initially. I had tried before and failed. I just used his search results to find the IMHO much more readable PDF version on Google's patent site.

I ran across the link in an online article I read about the VUDU box.
I think it may have been from the NYTimes.

                            Re: Question about new update??

I am willing to join redwein and beta test multiple box functionality as well. I currently have only one box but a commitment from Vudu to add multi-box support is all I need to go out and buy more.

I am also assuming that most of the users/early adopters who paid more than what the box is currently selling for and with only the potential of having the real-time streaming HD are also willing to pay for multiple boxes if they can be networked.

If external USB storage is added, the ability to share content across multiple boxes within the home, and the ability to add your legally purchased DVD content in addition to the box we have in our basement HT, I would add another 5 for certain (family room, 3 kids rooms, master bedroom) and potentially 2 other locations (kids playroom and living room). I was prepared to spend the same amount on one HTPC from a now defunct website www.tvease.net

Add the above items - some more of the user requested enhancements like music (sonos should be your model/template) and the great refinements/enhancements you guys come up with on your own and I think you take all the market share from direct competitors like amazon/tivo, netflix, appletv, penetrate into vod from cable and satellite and take out the high end video server systems Xperinet and Kaleidscape.

Story ends with Microsoft bidding billions for you and with their might negotiating a deal with the studios to have simultaneous theater and vudu movie release rentals from somewhere between $50 - $100.

I'd also get another box and agree to test multi-room/box functionality. I just finished beta-testing a product from Digeo (Moxi HMR), so I have time on my hands.
