    Power-crazy content owners

I know this is not a movie studio, but the behavior is so similar...this would be funny if it wasn't so ludicrous:

NFL Pulls Plug On Big-Screen Church Parties For Super Bowl

    In brief:
    • No one is allowed to "publicly exhibit" the game on a screen larger than 55 inches...
    • (Except sports bars are exempt from this law, of course...)
    • ...because (according to the NFL) smaller audiences watching more, smaller TV sets is better for ratings (???)
    • ...so if a church (or any other non-sports-bar) has the same big group in the same big auditorium with 55-inch sets scattered around the room, that's OK.
Wow. Just...wow. I think the NFL is suffering from the delusion that they're even bigger than The Beatles. I'm not particularly religious, and I've never been even remotely associated with any Christian denomination, but this has me incensed at the NFL.

This actually came up last year.

Question is: The NFL is not a legal authority. So how can they enforce this?

yes the same thing cropped up last year. I guess as long as you don't advertise it they won't find out.

The article indicated that copyright law specifically gave the NFL the right to impose those limitations, but exempted sports bars (which was probably the legislators' decision, not the NFL's, although it could have been a court decision).

Again, how are they going to know or enforce it. There's no copying going on here, etc.

Now, if places charged admission, that's another thing all together.

But yeah, this got people riled up last year and I'm glad it's having the same effect this year as well.

The quick fix is to serve beer at church. Now it's a sports bar.

I think the church initially was going to charge admission. I know the NFL ended that case by saying "the game can go on - just don't charge admission".

Um, no. That would be profiting off of someone else's copyrighted material without paying, and I would be not in the least sympathetic. The article was quite clear that they were trying to have church members (or in one case at-risk teens) just gather together for the sake of community and take advantage of the huge screen already in place. And they got cease-and-desist letters specifically for those free events because of the size of the sets.

These types of gatherings go on all the time each tyear for the Superbowl. As long as the right person never finds out about it, the NFL won't do anything about it since they don't know about it.

Are you charging admission and giving a cut of the profits to the NFL?
