    Apple is jumping on HD purchase bandwagon too and has somewhat more well-known movies for purchase (at least, the ones mentioned in the release).

    Personally, I don't think Apple will ever be truly successful with its AppleTV, as long as they require the use of a PC to watch content. The vast majority of users, and I speak from a place where most my family members are completely computer illiterate, and still rent physical DVDs, don't want a PC to be a requirement to watch a movie, nor are they technically capable to probably even set something up without my help. Truly if Apply wanted to succeed, they should of taken a page from their own playbook and "Make it simple stupid" by requiring the box to be plug and play. As it is now, you need to figure out how to setup the AppleTV box and connect it to your iTunes, then figure out how to transfer files. Which is probably just one step to many for the average user, who is looking for simple, IMO.

      Just to clarify, you don't need a PC/Mac to use the ATV. You just link it to your itunes account and it functions on it's own.

      I'm glad to see itunes adding HD purchases (which the VUDU has offered for a while now) b/c I think competition is good and forces the makers of all of these devices to keep up on their game. It's so interesting to see how this market has developed over the last year.

        Doesn't it require a PC/Mac, via iTunes, to manage the ATV? I mean after-all, that box has limited HDD space, and the content needs to be stored somewhere.

          It doesn't REQUIRE it. It does help, though, to have it linked to your computer if you go over the HD limit (40 gb or 160 gb). It's the same as with the VUDU- the ATV itself has a finite amount of space. So if you buy or own a lot of movies then you will eventually need to link it to your computer (for example I use a networked drive connected to my computer for storing my purchases and then stream them to the ATV).

          But, like the VUDU, if the HD has space you don't need a computer linked to it at all. If you are renter vs buyer then this is a non-issue.

            Spoken truly like a person who has never set eyes on a ATV. I have a Vudu in my bedroom and the ATV in my living room.

            I love them both, but the ATV gets 80% of my $$ because they have a much easier to use interface, much easier to find things to watch, and quite frankly that PC connection you mention below is a major BOON of the ATV not hinderance. I can watch my movies on my ATV, iMAC, PC or iPhone with NO additional fees. I keep several series of shows on my iphone for when i'm traveling.

            And setting up the ATV with itunes is .. plug and play .. there is nothing to setup turn the atv on, start itunes, they see each other, done.

              Well, to each their own. I think the Vudu search interface and UI experience is way better than ATVs. The PC connection is a big deal but most of the time, I watch a TV show once and that's about it.

              But hey, that's the good thing about choices!

                I agree that the UI is much nicer on the Vudu as is the quality. I have an Atv and a Vudu in the bedroom and a Vudu in the theater and most rentals are on the Vudu. Even my BD player gathers dust. They are both easy to set up and use. The Apple is good for TV shows and movies unavailable on Vudu or sometimes if I want to catch a flick that I am concerned more with price over quality I will pick the ATv.
                The other week my wife wanted to get Twilight and I didn't see it as "coming soon" on the Vudu box. So she preordered it from iTunes. She watched it and enjoyed it but later when it was up for sale in HDX she bought it again and was blown away by the difference. She is the reason I had to get a second Vudu.
                I like the fact that we are able to have choices these days and each person is able to decide which product best fills their needs. What I find is that Apple is being out "Appled" by Vudu. With a easy to use high quality product wrapped in a slick design

                (Disclaimer: I am typing this on my iBook G4... yes I am still using an iBook... it hasn't quit on me yet.)

                  Is that price right for the movie listed? I can purchase the Blu-ray Disc version from Amazon for $5 less.
