Re: My Thoughts on VUDU's Business Strategy

Maybe it is just me but I like the fact that Vudu is a "one trick pony". what they do they do extremely well. I am very satisfied with Vudu. I have so many other devices that try to be the "swiss army knife" of tech and they seem to be okay across the board but never excel at any one thing in particular. Vudu is a movie lovers dream. Great SD quality, near disc level HD quality all on demand, any time I want to watch a movie I know I can find something on Vudu. Vudu has curbed my buying habits for HD DVD and renting of Blu-ray. The SD quality on the handful of movies I have watched is exceptional and the HD quality is close enough to Disc that I am becoming more discerning as to what I purchase. The ease of use that Vudu affords is dangerous to a movie lover such as myself. I don't have time to do anything else with Vudu. I understand that there a some that want a box that does it all ,by I enjoy having one box that does one thing the best.

PS.. I also enjoy the free downloads of some classic films. I went crazy downloading the Sherlock Holmes films.

This was the goal. Streaming music is easy. Offering what Vudu does with video is not. And being the best at the primary job, streaming video, is what Vudu wanted to do. They didn't want to be a jack of all trades and master of none.

Obviously, the mods and beta testers are more in the know with regards to the resources that Vudu has and near-term plans, so what I was trying to say is that eventually there will come a point where rental software is very close to perfect (external storage, content management, maybe multi-box features) so, perhaps, at that time Vudu might think of adding additional functionality.

I appreciate the fact that Vudu offers the best experience and interface (new ATV doesn't seem as straighforward), but I must admit that it'd be nice if it could replace some other equipment and free up AV rack. And music/photo functionality seems to be fairly common these days, so it'd be the logical place to start.

Re: My Thoughts on VUDU's Business Strategy

Rest assured that Vudu is not standing still. The product will continue to evolve and get better over time. Will there be audio streaming some day? I hope so. Will I be able to play my own content? I hope so.

Do I know what Vudu has planned? No.

And frankly, based on what Vudu people have stated here, you guys know as much about what will be in SW version 1.3 as I or any of the other mods know at this point!

Re: My Thoughts on VUDU's Business Strategy

              Guys,

Sorry, but I must respectfully disagree with the sentiment in regards to allowing you to add your personal/home video library. I'm familiar with all the arguments in regards to know your market/niche and focus on that rather than overexpanding creating general functionality and mastering nothing but I throw this out for discussion:

Would iTunes and the iPod be as successful as it is if it did not allow the owner to add their own CD library?

We've seen the news articles and metrics - Apple continues to make huge profits from the revenues of song sales. The innovative hardware and interface of iTunes helped to get the big market share. The iTunes library initially was not as good as it is now. Other factors play a part in this but believe the market share and sales is what principally allowed Apple to grow/improve the library. To substantially grow the movie library which I believe is guarded more closely then music (although before iTunes music was similar), the adoption rate of Vudu has to grow. Increased market share in this segment and revenues from video rentals and sales will wield some power with the movie execs. I really don't see a difference as far as models goes with iTunes and Vudu.

The content for sale and the personal/home content work in concert.

                RK,

I don't think any one (at least not I) disagrees with you. I really hope Vudu does at some point allow me to add my own content to the library. But the goal of Vudu was to become the best in streaming first and perfect that. As others have pointed out with HD streaming now, things are pretty darn good and close to perfect. So if Vudu is going to continue to evolve what else are they going to do. A number of the 1.3 FW features have been leaked already. What will 1.4, or 1.5 or 2.0 contain? Who knows, but the box certainly has the capability to become much more than it is now. And I think that will happen over time.

Re: My Thoughts on VUDU's Business Strategy

I would only want the home video stuff if they can do it without making the UI for renting and buying movies more complicated. I have a Tivo Series 3 which, with the Amazon Unbox feature, allows me to do kind of what Vudu does. However, since the normal Tivo functionality (which I love) is combined with the home media and Amazon Unbox functionality, the experience for renting movies is so much less appealing to me that I only use my Vudu for VOD. This is one of the reasons that I think Vudu needs to be cautious about trying to be a "do it all" box.

Also each feature has it's own life-cycle and Vudu would be hard pressed to keep up with the latest and greatest of each.

For years, I've owned a Bose 5.1 audio system with a DVD player built-in. Although it still sounds great, the DVD player doesn't even do 480p.

Since there is no way I'm spending a few grand on a new audio system to upgrade my DVD player, I was forced to buy a new component DVD player and now the Bose DVD player is worthless to me.

I know this is more a hardware analogy, so hope you get my point.
