And I am not the only one who feels this way because I've seen data that indicates that people watch some HD programming simply because it's in HD.
Oh I feel the same way now. After watching a decent HD feed and then going to the news channel makes me wonder if my eyes are going bad. Didn't really care when I had a 26" HD set. But once you see it on a larger set it really makes a difference.

That's kind of my point -- HDTVs have been around for a while but content has been lagging (especially before Blu-Ray/HD-DVDs). I suppose this is what it was like for B&W->Color transition.

        I kinda disagree.

Directv has 70+ channels that are broadcast in HD, but I would say about 80% of the content on those channels is still SD. The Scifi and Speed channels are good examples.

MGM is an exception. They took all their James Bond movies and remastered them from the original film masters to HD 1080p. They had a James Bond marathon on their MGM HD movie channel a few weeks ago and it was simply "Awesome"! So I know it's possible to create good HD content even from older stuff, if they want to.

The technology is starting to catch up, but the content definitely is not.

Out of curiosity, I walked to a Blockbuster today to see what HD titles they carried now days.

I found they only carry BluRay (no HD-DVD) titles. I counted about 250 titles, but less than 50 were current releases. They charge for HD titles $5 a pop.

I think if you look many of the Mpeg2 are legacy channels for existing customers that haven't upgraded their receivers and 3 lnb dishes to the new 5 lnb dishes (which is needed to see the new satellites).

HBO and Showtime and Discovery channels where it's in Mpeg2 from the older Sat and also Mpeg4 fom the new Sat are good examples.

I would think that eventually the Mpeg2 would disappear over time as the customer base gets upgraded.

We have been told the official position from Vudu on HD quality:

The HD quality of the Vudu player is considered at this point to be "broadcast quality." This means that it is as good as broadcast HD and similar formats. The HD quality is not considered to be as good as HD-DVD or Blue-Ray and we don't want anyone to be misled otherwise.

The quality of Vudu's HD content is still evolving and as such will hopefully continue to improve as time goes on.
Its about time we have the official position. I think a lot of posts have been asking for this information for some time.

Re: Gizmodo's Take on Vudu's HD Quality

I think it's better than broadcast quality. With broadcast HD there is always macroblocking when you have fast movement, fast camera pans, and bright flashes. This has always annoyed me with broadcast shows and I see them in every HD show.
I don't see this macroblocking in the VUDU HD I've watched. This is why I rank the quality between broadcast and HD DVD/BD.

Re: Gizmodo's Take on Vudu's HD Quality

I just watched Transformers HD and then rented the SD version and compared them. No comparison. The SD version looks good as I think the Vudu does an exceptional job at upconversion. However, the HD version is much crisper and sharper and has far better color depth. Also, you can't pause the video and compare images. That's just not a valid comparison.

The radar image Aaron pointed out is the best. On the HD version, I could read some of the text. On the SD version, I couldn't read any of it.

Re: Gizmodo's Take on Vudu's HD Quality

Gizmodo posted a follow-up "battlemodo" that included AppleTV, Vudu, and 360. I think, the screenshots aren't very reliable way to judge video, but the chart is very nice (much better than AppleInsider's).

                  http://gizmodo.com/363600/apple-tv-v...oad-battlemodo

However, the most interesting part is one of the comments:
I recently took part in a survey (sorry, no screenshots) that ask questions related to the possibility that Vudu may be available shortly at a discounted rate with a subscription. Through Blockbuster, of all places. It'll be interesting to see if it comes to fruition.

I'm actually surprised as how bad the AppleTV shot of Transformers in HD is. YOW! However, screen shots are really tough to judge. Kinda like trying to take photographs of fireworks and capture the feeling...

Yeah, which is why I made a comment about that in the post. To me, the chart was the most illuminating part, especially movie counts. I didn't realize 360 had that many HD movies. Although, I never use my 360 for rentals -- the whole points concept really turns me off.
