    Amazon HD on Tivo Released

Tivo has released their Amazon HD service. I've seen it and the quality is stunning. It's very close to Vudu's HDX. I did a test on my Tivo and the speeds come in around 8 to 9 Mb/sec. It's not instant viewing but nearly so. You seem to have to wait about 2 or 3 minutes for the download to start but then with a fast enough connection you can pretty much watch it right away.

I will say this that the Vudu interface and UI for looking for movies is WAY better.

I do hope Vudu gets in the game with instant HDX soon - Amazon's quality is great and not having to wait 4 hours is even better...

I wonder what Amazon was able to do that vudu has not in order to achieve this. Can their compression be that much better? Or, are they able to do something at the network level from an acceleration standpoint.

Near instant vs. 4 hours. Wow.

Well Jon said they are downloading at about 8-9 Mb/s while Vudu limits it to about 4 Mb/s. That alone would account for the difference. If Vudu allowed for that fast of a download, HDX should work about the same. Of course this would require twice the upload horsepower which is more constricted in the P2P environment so they may be sensitive to that. But then again, P2P is much more scalable so Amazon would have to keep adding more and more hardware as the usage grows. But then again, Amazon probably can afford to do that and they are already in the hosting market so they are quite familiar wit managing large data centers, etc.

I'd settle for new episodes being available as they air. That's the main reason I've been purchasing a lot more TV shows from Amazon Unbox than from Vudu.

I'm debating reducing my CATV package because I rarely watch most of the channels and if I can simply purchase what I want as I want it, I think I might save more money.

If Vudu offered more TV shows, it would certainly be a plus.

Just a heads up for those thinking of picking up the Roku box which also got Unbox HD -- apparently, it's limited to 2.0 sound whereas TiVo can do 5.1 when available.

I also agree with VUDU needing better TV show functionality. Although, $3 a pop for HD episode is kind of pushing it.

Also Roku get the 720p encode at a lower bitrate for streaming and the Tivo gets the 1080p at a higher bitrate for download. There is a difference in PQ between the two. I watched Twilight on The Vudu, Atv, Tivo and Roku (my wife owns the HDX version and Apple Version so I thought it would be best to compare).

The Vudu and Tivo were VERY close in some scences I would say the Amazon encode was even better in others the Vudu stood out. So I would call it a draw. The Apple encode and the streaming encode on the Roku were similar as well. Soft PQ, not as sharp as the Vudu or Tivo almost like watching an upconverted DVD.

The Sound quality of the Vudu won hands down. It was more dynamic and more enveloping though the Tivo was very good in its own right. The apple encode was rather bland and about what you might find on TV not on DVD. The Roku, well, it was just lacking all together but is fine if you are just connecting straight to the TV and not utilizing a AV unit.

Also I am glad they have the TV shows as for some reason my Tivo didn't record Chuck this week and I was looking for it in HD. I was about to purchase it from iTunes when I read that Amazon was doing HD and instead bought it from them. I was willing to pay 2.99 to watch Sarah..er..I mean Chuck in HD.
