    Re: AppleTV vs VUDU

Found this on the Apple Forum (to show it's not just me):

"Was just told by someone at AppleCare that the upgrade software for Apple TV should be available by the end of the month (February). Boy this upset me, I rented a couple movies; downloaded them. Then went to watch them on my Apple TV and found out that I can only watch them on my computer or on an iPod. Thank God for small favors, I have a really nice widescreen TV that I was wanting to watch them on. But noooooooooooooo. You can't watch Apple content on Apple TV. I thought Apple was a better company than this. But anyway..... "

What is the point of an Apple TV box if you can't watch it on a TV?

I remember when the Apple TV announcement first came out and the group of people who were so positive that Apple would handle everything better than Vudu. It certainly doesn't look like it is turning out that way.

You can. But with version 1.1 firmware, if you rented a movie on your PC, you can't view it on the AppleTV. So everyone is waiting for the 2.0 release.

              Thanks!

Just checked and it's downloading the update on my ATV right now.

NA9D was right on with his prediction. Bet he knows who will win the Super Bowl next year too!

              Let the games begin!!

So is this the update that enables HD VOD? Let us know how it compares to Xbox Live and VUDU. I would expect it to be at or below Xbox Live quality with VUDU being above both of them.

Well, it's funny because I checked both on my ATV and on the Apple website just a couple hours ago before lunch and nothing. Then I go to lunch, come back and see this!

Both Ken, kmulder, and myself have promised to review the ATV HD quality vs. Vudu. I asked Ken to do it since I am considered by many to be un-objective!

I think Vudu updates its software quicker than ATV!

You must have been "Out to Lunch".

                        Haven't watched a movie yet.

So far I've found Vudu to be "Vastly" superior to Atv for ways to traverse the catalog to find movies of interest. I could not determine how many titles they had nor could filter for release year, new releases, classics, etc to find a title of interest. It's all mixed together alphabetically. I got so tired of wading through it all, I just gave up for now.

I could not find one single widescreen title with surround sound and found only a limited amount of HD with surround sound. That's a deal killer for me, since I will never rent a movie without DD5.1 (except for old classics).

I'll be interested in what others have to say about pictue quality, but so far I can't see any advantage to want to watch an Atv movie over a Vudu one (except their pricing is better).

For now I'm still happy in my little Vudu land! Can't believe I got excited waiting for Atv 2.0 to be released.

hmm, I might be more of a clueless consumer, but here are the things I'm interested in hearing about:
                            1. How is the HD video quality between both, at 720p or 1080i (Vudu doesn't support my TVs 1080p capability)?
                            2. Does the appleTV upscale the SD movies like Vudu does?
                            3. Library size? Currently, Vudu has 76 HD movies that are currently rentable in its library. Does Apple provide more, less, or the same?

Looking forward to the assessments you guys are going to provide. Thanks for doing that legwork for all of us tentative types.

ATV is 720p content - no 1080 content on ATV.

According to the ATV website all SD movies are shown at 480 resolution.
                              3. Library size? Currently, Vudu has 76 HD movies that are currently rentable in its library. Does Apple provide more, less, or the same?
From what I understand, as of right now, ATV is not there with the HD titles.

Add to it -- does ATV play HD rentals over component (like 360) or does it limit it to HDMI (like Vudu)?
