No, I think it does it over component. That's the way I have mine hooked up.

Actually, if you look at just the HD movies, there's quite a few and a number that Vudu doesn't have. Fantasic Four, Spiderman, Die Hard (the new one) and 300. Vudu has some like 3:10 to Yuma that ATV doesn't have.

It's making my entertainment options much more interesting!

I was able to set my Atv to 1080p. Of course that doesn't mean their content is.

I was referring to their non HD titles. They show as Widescreen but no Dolby logo. So I'm assuming their stereo not DD5.1

And many of the HD titles (I looked at) had no Dolby logo either. I'm out on the deck right now so don't have a specific example for you.

With Vudu, I am able to find many Widescreen titles listed with "Surround" sound !!

No, you didn't. The ATV is incapable of anything greater than 1080i.

No SD content on ATV is in DD. Only some of the HD content. This has been discussed in the past quite a bit.

Is seems odd how the ATV specs list that it's compatible with 1080P TVS but it never really tells you what resolutions it's capable of outputting. Compatability has nothing to do with what resolution is output.

That's why it's a deal killer for me.

Since I won't rent a title without the same audio quality that's on their equivalent DVD, that pretty much limits the effective titles available for me to rent to (what?) less than 50?

And I'm definitely not going to wade through the other 1,000 titles looking for them.

So to say the least I'm very disapointed in Atv's current offering and I haven't even watched a movie yet.

Sure it's compatible. But the HD content is in 720p and I am pretty sure the box output's a max of 1080i. Maybe I'm wrong since my TV doesn't support 1080p.

I double checked and my Atv options are:

                      480p
                      720p HD
                      1080i HD
                      1080p HD

I currently have mine set to 1080p and my Aquos says my hdmi connection to the box as 1080p.

                      Regards

                        Re: AppleTV vs VUDU

So Apple was able to talk studios into allowing HD rentals over component? It seems that Vudu got the raw deal here -- if MS and Apple can do it, why can't Vudu?

My Aquos has component inputs, but I use hdmi, so I'm too lazy to hook it up to component to find out. Sorry

Well, since NA9D posted in his thread that he used component for ATV and HDMI for Vudu, it seems that Apple got the same deal as MS and is able to do HD DRM'ed content over component. I use HDMI, so it doesn't affect me personally, but it's a bummer for all those people who have no spare ports left (or don't have HDMI period).

                              Re: AppleTV vs VUDU

It has not yet been discerned if the reported higher component resolutions on the ATV are merely scaled output of a lower resolution signal. The next test we need Jon to perform is comparing the ATV component vs ATV HDMI images side by side. If the HDMI is "better" then we know ATV is not showing the preferred HD resolution on the component outputs.
