With a lost of clueless comments... I was tempted to go there and correct some of them like:

Instant on means the movie is pre-downloaded, or that the VUDU effects browsing the internet.

I'll leave the comments up to the guys in the forum.

Actually, if you have a minimalist connection, the Vudu will affect browsing!

            Re: AppleTV vs VUDU

The post quoted below is the example of why I'd like Vudu to have more media functions. I mean, we understand that Vudu performs rentals/purchases better than ATV, but a lay person looks at the number of things he/she ATV and Vudu do and think: "Hey, Vudu only allows me to rent & buy movies but ATV also does music/iTunes, photos, user video, internet video and it's cheaper than Vudu!" (and yes, I know that Vudu has more storage than cheaper ATV model, but some people will ignore it).

            vudu non-starters for me:
            • can't play my ripped DVDs on it
            • photos.. didn't think i would use this but when the relative came over on the holidays this got used big time better then all going to the office to look at pics or individually looking at photo albums
            • appleTV has unlimited storage since you can stream content. vudu is limited to 250GB.. they are coming out with a 1TB i think for $1000... i have 1.5TB for my appleTV and the HDDs only cost me $100 a piece for 500GB so that's a 1.54GB AppleTV for $600.. the equivalent 1TB appleTV set up would be half the cost of the 1T vudu box at $500
            • it doesn't even play your music library... pathetic! this means i need still need to buy an appleTV...
            • it's not iTunes compatible...

              Re: AppleTV vs VUDU

ripped DVD's - hmm... is this legal?

iTunes compatible? The only devices out there that are compatible are AppleTV and the Roku Soundbridges. No other device is iTunes compatible. And anyhow, who would make a purchase decision based on iTunes? I'm an Apple nut and I wouldn't even do that - at least not for video.

Yes you can stream with the AppleTV, but it's a pain. You have to go to your sources menu. You have to choose which iTunes library you want (oh yeah, and if you forget to have iTunes running on your desktop you have to get up from the couch and go start it up). Loading up the iTunes library once connected takes a LONG time if you have a large library. The reason is that the AppleTV has to read the XML data and process it for the entire library at once. It takes me 2 to 3 minutes to do this and my library is moderate in size.

You can't look at individual photos on the AppleTV. You have to look only at Slideshows. You can't browse your photo library. And if you don't have all your photos synched (which takes up a lot of disk space for a 10,000+ library like I have), then you have to connect to your machine running iTunes. But wait. I forgot to start iTunes. Then I forget, you might have to have iPhoto running as well...The photo capability of the ATV is my biggest disappointment. Other than the cool transitions, it's worthless. Can't zoom in on a pic, can't browse the library, etc.

The best feature of the ATV is the screen saver. Now that is cool.

ATV is still a door stop...

It sounds like the Xbox 360 is a much better choice than ATV for viewing pictures. And It also plays music.
Alll of my music is in the WMA format. I have everything at 128kbs for portable devices and I have it also in WMA lossless for listening at home from my squeezeboxes or my 360's.
But starting this year I will only buy digital downloads of the music.(i'm done buying CDs after 23 years) The Zune Marketplace downloads are in the WMA 192kbs format.

Yeah, but the XBox is made by Microcrap. It's anathema to a Mac person. Just like RonV won't buy anything Apple, there's a lot of us that hate (or outright refuse) to buy anything manufactured by the Bill Gates Kool-aid company.

That's just silly -- people have too much affection for huge multinational corporations who are trying to make money off them. Windows vs. OS X battle is getting old, just like hearing all those people who still insert snarky remarks about root kits into comments on every story involving Sony.

There's always Play Station 3. It does similar stuff as Xbox but has a Blu-Ray player (not HD-DVD).

Oh absolutely not, as long as you're getting what you want and happy with it. There's a certain level of comfort in sticking with a company you're familar with because it lets you have of certain level of expectation in the quality of their products.

That's why I've always stuck to Chevy for my vehicles.

When I bought my ATV a few weeks ago, it was the first Apple product I've ever purchased. I am so unhappy with it, it will definitely be harder for me to buy Apple again.

In the cases you typically see online, it's brand dis-loyalty, i.e. people ripping on a particular product just because it was not made by a company they like.

All other things being equal, preferring one brand over the other is alright, but if someone is willing to reject a better product from a brand they don't like ("Awesome product, but it's made by ____"), it makes no economical sense.

So would you not buy a car with the Microsoft Sync system installed. We have 2 of them and they seem to have the best integration for phones, iPods, etc.
