    I don't get it

Vudu sounded interesting at first glance. But at 3-5x the cost of a DVD player, and charging the rates for rentals, and cmparable rates for DVDs (that I can use in any player, anywhere (barring region coding)); what is the attraction?

If I want to download movies, I could use one of the many other services available and put it on my Vista PC, sharing it through my xBox. Can someone please help me understand the attraction. This sounds like one of those crazy iTunes TV boxes.

Many people, including Vudu owners, would like Vudu to be a complete Netflix replacement (i.e. offer monthly plans), but right now it's more of a replacement for cable/satellite VOD and brick-and-mortar rental stores. Vudu offers a selection that in generally superior to either and offers a convenience of immediate watching, so you don't have to get into the car and drive to the nearest Blockbuster.

Having said that, rest assured that your points have been brought up many times over on this forums and Vudu is not standing still (it's been out only for a few months and already improved significantly). Bottom line is that no one is forcing you to buy Vudu right now. To some people, Vudu's current features are enough to pay the early adapter premium and jump on the bandwagon. Others, e.g. heavy Netflix users, want more and choose to wait.

Hmm...Vudu is an HD piece of hardware and as such is lower cost than most BluRay DVD players.

If you don't want to have over 5000 movies (we can say that now since we have about 5008 in the catalog! ) availalbe at the touch of a finger no one is forcing you to purchase.

If you like to wait 3 days for Netflix so you can play them in your $30 composite Video DVD player that's fine.

If you want to drive to Blockbuster in a snow storm and stand in line to rent a movie and watch it on your $50 DVD player, fine.

          Vudu isn't for you then.

But if you want the convenience of a large movie catalog with around 80 HD titles (and growing), then Vudu is for you. The PC options you mention probably all cost the same unless you are donwloading said movies illegally. And not everyone has an XBox or wants a PC in their entertainment center.

Thank you, but I'll let Stewart and Colbert handle election coverage (should get even better with writers back!).

Wouldn't that make it Indecision 2008?

They have done pretty well during the strike. I have to say that Colbert seems to be better "on his own" than Jon Stewart.

Colbert was in a comedy improv group plus he rarely uses anyone else on the show unlike Stewart and his correspondents.

P.S. Their mock feud with Conan O'Brien and the 3-show resolution was pretty good.

Ok guys enough Decision/In-decision 2008. Back on track for this thread. So why was this tread started? Oh yea, BermudaLamb wanted a better understanding of what the VUDU brings to the table for VOD/DVD-Rental marketplace.

                      Convenience
5000 titles at your fingertips(85 HD) to watch instantly when you want. No waiting one to three days for a disc in the mail, only to not be in the mood to watch that title when it arrives. I like the idea of being able to watch a title when I'm in the mood which means right away and VUDU definitely delivers.

My bad! I believe NA9D and myself already offered out points of view on where Vudu fits in the marketplace.

I'd also like to add that Vudu needs to be careful in managing expectations, meaning that people should be aware that -- as of today -- the box can't fully replace Netflix (i.e. unlimited rentals for monthly fee) or offer Blu-Ray/HD-DVD level of quality.

Personally, I don't think audio & video quality is a major negative, but I'm curious to see what will be Vudu's answer to whatever Netflix puts out this year.

We would need to see what they put out before we could guess how Vudu will answer it.

Correct. The big question is whether Netflix will be able to expand its Watch It Now library, i.e. will they offer unlimited rentals on new titles and popular catalog ones. It's a major knock on WIN feature, but there hasn't been an uproar because it's not a major selling point.

As far as rentals go Vudu has replaced Blockbuster, Netflix, and Xbox Live. and I will be going with Vudu over Apple TV for my movie rentals. It is just to easy to find something that I can be in the mood for. The ATV and Xbox will get their use in the event I can not find anything on Vudu (or my wife is watching a movie that I am not in the mood to watch.
