I ran across a few articles about Netflix's plans to work with LG to enable streaming Netflix movies on some select models of their tvs.

They said it probably wouldn't be available until 2nd half of 2008.

The thing that was most interesting is that Netflix would give their customers the same deal for viewing movies as they do now for their "Watch Now" online streaming content.

To me that's a clue the conent they will stream to the LG sets will be identical to what's available with "Watch Now".

So then if you can buy that then what they will offer later this year are:

    * Library movies only, no current releases.
    * SD content with stereo sound only. No HD.
    * Streaming that's very network sensitive to buffering with viewing interruptions with no way to recover gracefully from network errors.

I know because as a Netflix customer, I've used their pathetic excuse for a streaming movie service for awhile and found it well...... pathetic.

So if you believe any of that then you can easily conclude that Vudu has nothing to fear from Netflix.

But Netflix is big. Although I did just cancel my service with them this week after being a member for over 9 years. They won' t be getting anymore money from me.(Not specifically because of my VUDU but partially. The main reason was their new HD DVD policy. And they were going to replace some of my Hd DVDs in my queue with SD DVDs later this month) Anyway more money for me to spend on VUDU. I'll need it since I seem to be hooked on this time tunnel TV show.

If you like to wait 3 days for Netflix so you can play them in your $30 composite Video DVD player that's fine.

If you want to drive to Blockbuster in a snow storm and stand in line to rent a movie and watch it on your $50 DVD player, fine.

        Vudu isn't for you then.

But if you want the convenience of a large movie catalog with around 80 HD titles (and growing), then Vudu is for you. The PC options you mention probably all cost the same unless you are donwloading said movies illegally. And not everyone has an XBox or wants a PC in their entertainment center.
Well, first of all, I'm a subscriber to BlockBuster Online not Netflix. They still do HD DVD (for now). So I get lots of movies for a low monthly fee. Their turn around is pretty much three days total. I get a movie on Monday, watch it that night, return it the next day, and get shipped a new one on the same day, showing up in my mailbox on Wednesday.

Also, let's face facts here, we are now living in a Wal-Mart ecomony! IMHO, the winner of Blu-ray vs HD DVD will be the first one to put a $99 player on the Wal-Mart shelves. Of course the true clincher would be the $49 1080i player. It won't matter what the studios think then.

Vudu sounds like a great idea, but the pricing needs to be monthly, for "rentals" and discounted (about 50%) for movies. That is why I never watch anything through the OnDemand feature of my cable. If I have to pay a per movie fee, and don't have a DVD to show for it, I want the movie when it is in the theatre.

What was that I just said? Yeah, I want the movie as soon as it hits the theatre. My entertainment room at home is just as good, if not better and certainly more comfortable than anything available at any theatre!

The one thing I'm not certain of is how many Vudu boxes I can tie to one account. This, to me, is why Tivo is such a ripoff. Yeah, they have a pretty interface, but really there are other better alternatives. Buy a cheap PC with Linux and use MythTV for example.

          Re: I don't get it

I for one prefer the current pay per view pricing model over a subscription fee. If they offer a subscription, I hope it is in addition to the current system rather than a replacement.

About the number of Vudus on one account. I currently have 5. I can rent or buy from any of them and the same account is charged. The big thing that is missing is the ability to share content across boxes.

I also have 4 Tivo Series 3. For them, I do pay a subscription fee per box but I don't feel it is a rip off. I think the Tivo DVR functionality is way better than any other DVR that I have ever seen. Tivo does allow you to transfer recordings from one box to another but it is prohibited for a lot of copyrighted movie content due to licensing restrictions. That may be part of why Vudu may have difficulty in sharing content across boxes as well.

Ability to watch movies at home at the same time they come out in theaters is something that's been requested for years. You are correct -- many of us have equipment that offers a similar or better experience, especially since we are in control (no pesky crying babies!) and, with the cost of going to the movies ever rising, I have seen figures like $40-70/movie as a fair price.

Now, some independent studios do something like that already (same-day DVD & theater release), but I don't think it's going to happen soon with major studios -- theater owners would be very, very upset.

If want to watch a movie on Monday on my Vudu - I watch it. I don't have to wait for the mail to arrive. Or better yet, I can watch the movie on Sunday since I have an emergency school board meeting suddenly scheduled for Monday. But you can't because your movie doesn't arrive until Monday. You think your Blockbuster Online is so wonderful, but what if you decide you want a different movie than the one you have? Oh yes, get in the card and drive to Blockbuster. How quaint and so 1990s.

You might be living in a Wal-Mart economy, but I am not. By the way, Wal-Mart pulled out of the online movie business. So there's a lot about the economy that Wal-Mart doesn't drive.

Vudu sounds like a great idea, but the pricing needs to be monthly, for "rentals" and discounted (about 50%) for movies. Absolutely NOT. That is the worst idea to have a subscription model. Subscription models ONLY work if you constantly watch a lot of movies. The idea is similar to the buffet at a restaurant. You see all this wonderful food and you pay the $25 for all you can eat but in reality, you only eat $15 worth of warmed and stale food. You could order off the menu what you end up eating for half the price.

This is why I never will subscribe to a subscription service. It is NOT a deal to the consumer. The reason it is offered is not to give you free movies but to make a lot of money. I would wager that most people with subscription services don't even come close to breaking even on their subscriptions.

Look at the online music industry. Everyone thinks subscriptions are the way to go. Yet, the one online store that doesn't offer subscriptions but rather purchases has 70% to 80% of the market. Could it be that most people are tired of having to pay a fixed amount every month wether they use the service or not?

What was that I just said? Yeah, I want the movie as soon as it hits the theatre. My entertainment room at home is just as good, if not better and certainly more comfortable than anything available at any theatre!
Well, that is not likely to happen any time soon. Pipe Dreams are under the bed (monsters are in the closet).

TiVo is a subscription account similar to what you just praised above. With multiple Vudu's with subscriptions, you'd have multiple fees for each one. So in your model, someone with 3 boxes would be paying 3 subscription fees. With the pay as you go model, you pay for only what you use on each box. If the box rents no movies that month, you don't pay a fee for it.

But to answer the question, you can basically have as many Vudus as your upstream bandwidth can support.

                Re: I don't get it

NA9D, I don't think anyone here is arguing for subscription-only model. Rather, we think that it would be a nice alternative for SOME people to have some sort of a subscription plan in addition to pay-per-view model.

Looking at titles in Netflix's Watch It Now program, it's unlikely that Vudu will be able to offer new releases as part of all-you-can-eat subscription, but perhaps SOME material (like older TV shows) could be part of unlimited viewing. Or, for example, have a plan that offers a set number of movies per month at a discount.

Sure, most people don't get their money's worth from Netflix/Blockbuster Online (after all, that's how those companies make money), but as long as Vudu offers two approaches, it's really up to individuals to decide what's best for them.

                More choice > Less choice.

                  Really?

                  My interpretation of:
Vudu sounds like a great idea, but the pricing needs to be monthly
                  is a subscription based model.

I'd be willing to have Vudu support both pay as you go and subscription based. But then people will balk at the price of the box (more than they are now). People are so accustomed to paying nearly zip for a piece of hardware and then paying for a subscription.

I don't get how you don't get that Vudu is fantastic! Oh well, while you look for reasons not to support Vudu, I'll be enjoying my countless rentals and purchases made on the little black box you don't get.
