    Re: Captions or Subtitles?

Okay I see that most of the recent TV episodes in My VUDU do indeed support and display subtitles. Is there a plan to provide subtitles for movies?

Even though you say that CC is now available os PS3 it is not working for me. I can go to MyVudu and change the font/size/background/etc, but while watching a movie I do not get the option to turn it on, I do not get the "parentheses" or anything expect the options to change the SD/HD or the chapter menu.

Can you help? I have emailed tech support twice with no response.

        Hey,

Captions are currently available for all new TV shows (those originally aired after 9/30/2012). For those, look for a "CC" button on the play bar (the bar at the bottom of the video when playing back) and select the language you want (currently mostly English only).

Most older TV shows and movies do not yet have captions, but they will be added over time.

This is more exciting that the first time I saw Megan Fox in hot pants in Transformers!

Can't wait to see CC on movies and more TV shows. For me, it helps for late night viewing.

Last night I was watching Dreamworks Dragons: Riders of Berk in my bedroom (Vudu app via PS3). I noticed it offered captioning. NICE!

Can't wait for all movies and TV shows on Vudu to offer captioning. It really does come in handy -- not to mention that it's essential for people with hearing disabilities.

I should also mention it's currently available on most Samsung devices, the web, tablets, the PS3, XBox, and I believe all 2013 devices. It will be added to older devices when and if the manufacturer pushes out a firmware update (for this reason, some older devices that are no longer supported by the mfr or don't have the hardware specs may not get them).

What's the ruling on movies having captions? I was told by support that since Total Recall was in theaters before September 30, 2012, they didn't have to add subtitles even though it just became available for rental last week.

What about the Extended/Director's Cut of movies. Those versions are previously not shown, so shouldn't they always have them now?

Captions are required on all new TV content broadcast after 9/30. It doesn't apply to new theatrical releases, since that's not in the FCC domain.

Eventually it will also apply to existing content but that's at a later date as adding captions for thousands of library titles is a non-trivial task

Thanks for the reply. I assumed it would apply to movies since the movie we watched the day before had them. ParaNorman is a fun movie to watch btw.

I recently purchased an episode of the simpsons to test watching a program with CC on my iphone since IOS devices are supposed to be supported. The show was from season 24 and said subtitles: English. I have the caption option selected in my profile. There was absolutely no option to turn on or view subtitles on my iphone vudu video app (just go back 30 section, play/pause, and ff), so how is it that ios devices support vudu captions/subtitles? I was able to get subtitles for the program to work on my PS3.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

                        Re: Captions or Subtitles?

Here are some government statistics on deaf and hard of hearing occurrences in the US:

*Approximately 17 percent (36 million) of American adults report some degree of hearing loss.

*There is a strong relationship between age and reported hearing loss: 18 percent of American adults 45-64 years old, 30 percent of adults 65-74 years old, and 47 percent of adults 75 years old or older have a hearing loss.

*About 2 to 3 out of every 1,000 children in the United States are born deaf or hard-of-hearing. Nine out of every 10 children who are born deaf are born to parents who can hear.

*The NIDCD estimates that approximately 15 percent (26 million) of Americans between the ages of 20 and 69 have high frequency hearing loss due to exposure to loud sounds or noise at work or in leisure activities.

*Approximately 4,000 new cases of sudden deafness occur each year in the United States.

That's an awful lot of deaf and hard of hearing people, me included. So, when does VUDU plan to acknowledge our existence?

WOW! This thread was started in 2007 and today, they have not resolve this issue yet??? I'm trying to watch Snitch while I type and it's no captioned or subtitled. I'm kind of upset for paying $5.99 (for the second time) hoping that it's captioned or subtitled. I'm Deaf myself and rely on subtitles. Now I'm going to demand my money back. $12 for two movies that I could not enjoy.

If they don't have subtitles / CC I would at least like the option to use my own, I think this would give vudu a decisive advantage over competitors by making their system seem more open.

I also have a gripe about having to buy a movie in one language or another. If they have multiple audio streams why can't I have them all? netflix does that just fine, of course they use silverlight.
