Few things VUDU needs to be successful

There's a few things that VUDU needs to do to be successful in my eyes.
1: True High Def... Talking atleast same quality as Blu Ray or HDDVD, actually utilize my HD TVs picture quality limitations. Not DVD upscaling which no matter what anyone says there's no actual noticeable picture difference when using DVD upscaling. Whether or not it can provide that will be a major deciding factor when determining whether or not I go with one of those players or just get the VUDU player.
2: Available titles... I don't want the HD vs. BluRay problem where I need to purchase both units just to get the movie titles I like. (probably one of the biggest issues that really nobody has much control over but nonetheless)
3: No unnecessary advertising. I don't want 30 minutes of "womens feminine product" commercials plagueing my movie that I just purchased.
4: Absolutely no cueing of movies when "renting" them. I don't want a blockbuster online or netflix experience where I want to watch a movie but I have to wait for days or even hours just to get it. (If it's waiting for the movie to download to the VUDU unit that's another thing). I don't want to wait due to capacity issues on VUDU's end.

My last opinion (and that is what this entire email is, one man's uneducated opinion). When "purchasing" movies, are you simply purchasing the right to watch that movie at anytime w/o recurring rental costs? Otherwise I don't see how it's possible to download a high definition movie onto the meager 250 gig hard drive without waiting forever for your download?
The thing that makes IPod's so much fun is the fact that you have a ridiculous amount of space so you find yourself just downloading a million songs to say "I have 23,456 songs" even though you only listen to 80 of them. People will want to download as many movie titles as possible. So my other issue of where is your "purchased" movie stored, the 250 gig hard drive? There better be a way to attach an external hard drive or your computer to store some of the movies. Those people who want to download titles just to have them will fill up that VUDU drive pretty quickly if the high definition movies you purchase are the same file size as on Blu Ray or HDDVD.

Great comments! Here's what I can tell you from my experience:

    1) YES! The VUDU is capable of full HD content, although you will need a faster download pipe to view it very soon after renting it. The available content will depend upon what the studios offer and what the users demand!

    2) New releases and major studios are all ready to go. Lots of indies, too. There's nothing about the way VUDU serves content that should keep it from making content available once the studios make it available, except if premium cable channels demand exclusive deals for a few weeks soon after the movie leaves the theaters, which I've heard some of them do.

    3) There are NO ads ANYWHERE to be seen. I have two ReplayTV DVRs, and I HATE commercials. I almost cried with pride when my little daughter asked me to "skip it, daddy" when we were watching TV at my in-laws' house and a commercial came on. If there were ads, I wouldn't be on board.

    4) This depends on your bandwidth. What's your download speed? If it's more than 2Mbps, you should be able to watch SD content instantly, unless you're filesharing constantly or something. Instant gratification!

Finally, the portability issue: it's definitely on the drawing board, but it's not due until later into the first year of its release. Right now, they want to make sure the box does what it's supposed to do and does it flawlessly. But that's part of the plan, and the box does have USB connections for just that reason.

    I hope this helped!

Also, don't forget, to save on bandwidth, that you can RENT one to many movies earlier and download them overnight or when you're at work. The rental period doesn't start until you hit "Watch Now". This way you can rent several movies and watch them whenever you want with no bandwidth usage while you are home.

        Max, this isn't quite correct.

Portability of content - meaning being able to download it to a computer or iPod - is something that is not currently available and it is unknown when of if it ever will be. Yeah, it's a drag, but it's not Vudu's call. It's up to the content providers - the studios. Once they give it a go, then it's simply a matter of developing the firmware to support it.

What is coming, is the ability to save content to other media. Some time next year, you will be able to add your own, off the shelf USB hard drive to the box. The box will then format the drive so it can use it and it will become part of the storage system for the Vudu. So the expansion capabilities will become significant...

Right, sorry, I'm still used to thinking of exporting as making it portable, like I do with other devices. They're two separate issues here, especially since the studios will not allow VUDU to license content that can be used outside their license.
