    Vudu coming to the computer?

    http://newteevee.com/2007/09/21/slin...tv-nfl-sunday/

Lets say you are on a biz trip and want to watch an HD movie on your 17" widescreen macbook pro. Seems like a kick butt idea.

Easy to do with your Vudu. Pack your Vudu in your luggage (it's very small), and then connect one of the video outputs to your MBP and watch it. Just have to figure out which signal will look best on the computer. Surely that MBP has support for video inputs.

unless its HDMI it will only be 480p

I could also take my plasma, and 5.1 system with me but I like to keep it simple so I just have my macbook pro and some shure headphones

Re: Vudu coming to the computer?

Unfortunately, no. A computer client would be good, but given the fact that most "broadband" I've seen in hotel rooms is crap, I wonder how good an experience it would be anyhow. And being a big Slingbox user, one of the reason why I hate the RF only remote is that I can't control the Vudu with my Slingbox or anything else for that matter!

Portability of content is one of the things that we've been asking for. Vudu knows it and at this point I believe the biggest factor for why portability isn't available today is that the studios have not yet said it's OK. Maybe someday..

That would be ideal. Rent a movie, download it to your MPB and then go on your trip. Certainly building the DRM into the file can't be that hard...

Re: Vudu coming to the computer?

All they'd really need is to pick a DRM format and a player that's capable of managing licenses over the Internet. It could be tied to your VUDU account, and you wouldn't want to other people log into that, as it's tied to your credit card. Such players and formats already exist, although I don't know if they'd have to adapt them much to fit this model. I mean, the words Digital Rights Removal...er, Management taste like ashes in my mouth, but if it means portability, and it was ONLY for my VUDU content, I'd install a crippleware media player.

And before anyone says it, of course these would be easy to circumvent. If you can watch or hear it, it can be pirated, but hopefully the studios would be happy with something like the above solution.

Sad part is that it prolly won't ever work on an iPod. Steve and Co. hold the DRM keys to the iPod and given the Vudu competes with iTunes (well it would if portability were allowed or if iTunes had true VOD a la AppleTV), a snowball prolly has a better chance of lasting 2 weeks you know where...

Re: Vudu coming to the computer?

I think this is very good idea. There are more than one way to implement this.
If Vudu do it right, Vudu computer has following advantages.

Instant start: no more waiting for your Vudu box to arrive, instant start and instant rental.

Low or zero initial cost. Compare to a $399 box.

Portable contents. Once download to computer, user can maintain their own content.

As I said, there are more than one way to implement it, I will give one example.

1: Vudu provide A USB key fob which contain unique key. (May work as a remote receiver if you like)
2: Vudu server provide scrambled media download to computer.
3: When use play back, software check USB key for authentication. (rental expire, ownership...)

User can copy content into a portable media, play it on another computer as long as the same USB key is inserted.
User can't copy and distribute content (pirate), since the content won't play without the correct key.

Re: Vudu coming to the computer?

Sorry I was called into a meeting so I can't finish it and there is no edit function on this forum. Here is part 2.

Of course with a USB key, it can't be instant start or zero cost.
Then again you can get rid of it by authenticate with computer ID or MAC address.
However in this case, content won't be able to portable, probably not good for owning the title, but perfect for rental business.

There should be an EDIT button in each post, allowing you to edit your own postings. Can you please look again?

Hmm...Good to know that. We will look into seeing about upgrading user permissions to allow editing of posts. I think it has to be done by a site admin (of which we moderators are not) but I'll put in the request...

Re: Vudu coming to the computer?

Yes, vBulletin has an option to allow/disallow members to edit their posts, and it even allows you to limit it to the first X minutes after posting, which is not a bad idea, but not usually necessary. But we'll try to get an Admin to change that setting.

Can anyone else see the Edit button on their posts now? (It may have to be a recent post, so if you post "No", check for an edit button after you submit, and if you see one...well, use it to update the post! )

Yes, the edit button appears! Will try to check back later to see if it is timed.
