    HDX and HD movie sizes?

I wouold have done a search for this question but search is not working for me.
I'm looking at going to Comcast internet to upgrade my speed. However, they have a 250 gb cap monthly download. I was wondering what the size of HDX and HD movies are on the average?

I have to take into consideration my downloads plus uploads plus my normal internet use.

    Thanks

Well at 4 Mb/S, which is the download speed used, an HD movie lasting 2 hours would be roughly 3.6 GB. Since an HDX download uses the same speed but can take 4 hours or so, it would be roughly twice that. So I would say 4 GB for HD and 8 GB for HDX is a good number to work with.

For Comcast, maybe you want to consider the business class service. It costs a little more than the residential but they don't have any cap at all. We use way more than 250 GB/month and have their 50/10 business class service.

      Hi ReyalP,

Redwein pretty much nailed the file size. However, we use variable bit-rate for the encode of HDX content so the file size could be a bit higher depending on the movie.

Also, the first month of downloads for the box could be as high as 60-70 GB of data, depending on how long ago the box was manufactured.

I just did the speed test on vudu's site. I clocked in at just over 5 mbbs. About how long will it take me to download HDX movies normally?

At this time HDX movies are limited to 4 Mb/sec. So it will still take about 4 hours. HDX movies have a bit rate of roughly 9 Mb/sec but as Jimmy pointed out, they use VBR so that bit rate varies.

As for hitting the 250 Gig cap - it's unlikely. We've calculated numerous times that the Vudu probably uses about 30 to 40 Gig maximum in uploads during a month. And depending on how many movies you watch, you'll maybe add another 40 to 60 gig per month. So you still have plenty of bandwidth.

            1. So, does it mean, my VUDU box sitting at home keeps uploading/pushing content to fellow VUDU boxes (p2p) and the upload sizes might go up to 30 to 40 gigs a month?

            2. VBR's.....how do i check the bit rate VUDU is using for my purchases? My Roku box clearly shows the bit rates for both Amazon and Netflix purchases.

            3. Also, on a different note, I never had any issues with downloading VUDU movies. Its always been great. But, my brother who lives in NC, has issues with watching movies immediately inspite of having a 6mbps cable connection. Do you know why? He is able to watch movies on his Apple TV without any issues.
