    Vudu on LG BD390

I signed up with Vudu yesterday. I'm using the LG blu-ray player. I have only looked at HDX trailers and on some of them the streaming stops to reload. On some HDX trailers I get 1 bar and others 3. I'm not sure if this is an issue with Vudu, LG or my wired network. My ISP is Comcast and I have their 25Mbps service. I thought perhaps it was my router (Linksys BEFSR41) which is a little old; but, up to now hasn't presented any problems with streaming video. What are the equipment requirements for HDX on LG? Any suggestions? Thanks

    Hi Chrys,

The BEFSR41 is listed on our site as being an incompatible router for the VUDU boxes, but it has not been tested with the LG TV or player. Are you having any trouble with any of the other apps, e.g. YouTube?

VUDU generally have much larger files to stream than other services, especially HDX, which is sensitive to network fluctuations. Can you try with the HDX previews with only the VUDU connected to the network? This means you will have to unplug/disconnect all other devices. Do you still experience reloads?

If so, when did it occur (hours/minutes/seconds/ date)?

What is your system ID? You can find that under MY VUDU > INFO&SETTINGS > SYSTEM INFO.

      Re: Vudu on LG BD390

Strange. I rebooted the network and changed the ip (in BD390 box) from static to dynamic and all is well. No more reloading for trailers and previews. I can't wait to watch a movie as soon as I can find some time.

Most of the time I get one bar and I realize that all it takes to get a good feed is one bar. But I was wondering what internet connectivity gets you 3 bars? I'm on 25Mbps service or is it a function of vudu traffic?

Thanks (and I'll probably have more questions). Your service is awesome.

        Chrys,

25 Mbps should get you three bars with all levels of quality (SD, HD & HDX)... in theory. However you have to take into consideration your networking environment as well as any ISP anomalies.

I've encountered the same "bar challenge"-- I was running my BD 390 connected wirelessly via Apple Extreme to my Comcast60 connection, but only saw one bar on many trailers. When I pulled a 50' ethernet cable to the box from the router, I still only got one bar (despite the SpeedTest check on the line of north of 55Mbps).

          Another explanation?

I sent a note to support about the "one bar" question.

Would you recommend opening up any ports on my router?

                Re: Vudu on LG BD390

I notice with my BD390 I will initially get one bar on HDX and then a few seconds after it starts playing it jumps up to three HDX bars.
This is with a FIOS 25/15 connection.

With HD or SD it starts with three bars.
Although this is only from 25 minutes of testing this morning. I'll be checking it out out some more this weekend and hopefully get the chance to rent a few HDX titles.

My internet connection is 11 mbps down using AT&T Uverse and I have run the BD390 with both wireless and cabled. Both exhibit the same behavior with HDX. Starts with 1 bar and within say 3 seconds its three bars.

We watched two movies last night on the BD390 from VUDU one with the wireless connection and the other with wired. HDX played all the way though. Very happy.

                      Re: Vudu on LG BD390

I got a chance to watch a movie last night and experienced the 1 bar issue with HDX movies. As soon as I switch to HD I get 3 bars. With HDX I experience repeated 'reloading'. I tested my line with testmy.net and get 25+Mbps. I wonder if the common denominator here is Comcast, my ISP. The AT&T folks don't seem to have a problem with the 1 bar issue.

Vudu TS please look into this. Thx

PS: if there are router settings I should have pls let me know.

                        Re: Vudu on LG BD390

Comcast has a speed boost technology. The first part of a transfer can be really fast and then it dials down the bandwidth. Try running your test from:

                        http://speedtest.vudu.com/cdn1/

When running the test watch the dial, does it stay sustained or does it drop down after starting? Since its only a 15 second test it may not exhibit this behavior but this is how you can tell if Comcast's speed booster is kicked in and then is used up.

What type of router are you using? Since streaming movies is a download operation there isn't much that the router can really do in this area to prioritize traffic but if you could provide this info it may help.

I'm using a wired router, Linksys BEFSR41 (v4). With the Vudu STB (BX100) I know Vudu identifies my router as problematic. I'm not sure this should be applicable if I'm going through the LG BD390 Blu-ray player.

Speed looks good...I agree with the VUDU folks on the BEFSR41. There is a issue with connection tracking in this model. I have a V1 of the BEFSR41 when they only had 10/half for the WAN port and I took that out of service after Linksys removed SPI from my model. Since then I have used routers that support DD-WRT or Tomato firmware since you can tweek the heck out of them.

Here is a trick you may want to try. Can you put your BD390 directly on the cable modem. You'll have to power off the cable modem first so the mac table on the modem get reset, disconnect ther router network cable, and plug in the BD390's network cable, power up the cable modem, power on the BD390. Doing this would elminate any issue with the router.

Using Fios and their wireless modem on top of my PC from another room to the living room at the LG player down a hall.

I still get one bar and reloading sometimes on this connection with the BD390
I stopped using the Lynksys N modem (with the Player) recomended by LG, the Verzion Fios modem seems to perform better in HDX. (at least yesterday)

I get smoking fast speed on the Lynksys N modem on my Iphone!?! 10 Mbps versus 6 Mbbps on the Fios modem.

                              Confused but happy
