    Speed Issues on Brazil

Hi all. I have been a vudu user and fan most of the year and last night tried the Brazil download. I've lurked on here from time to time but thought I'd make a first post to see if anyone else has experienced my issue and if the wisdom of the forum could help with a solution.

I'm having trouble with the download speeds in Brazil and can rarely get more than one bar. I have Comcast cable internet and typically test out between 8 and 12MBS on speedtest.net. I am using the vudu wireless kit with a Linksys WRT54G (v6) router. In Amadeus, the quality selection picks the 4+MBS setting. I have been able to get instant HD downloads (have never timed exactly how long HDX took). When I switched to Brazil, though, I can only get 1 bar of service. I have not yet tried a full movie but most HDX free previews were prone to re-start. SD & HD play better but still only show 1 bar of service. Similarly, when scrolling through the catalogs, I often get the stopwatch pop up as cover art and summaries load/refresh (I'm not sure if that's typical of Brazil streaming service or a function of download speed but thought I'd mention). After playing with Brazil for a while, I switched back to Amadeus and tested the connection and it still suggested top quality.

I do not see that Brazil has a way to check internet speed or edit settings. Any others with similar experience or suggestions on what to try?

Sorry for the long post but thanks for the help!

    Re: Speed Issues on Brazil

I get three bars on HDX with Brazil. Which would be the 9mbs encodes. I would think one bar would be the lowest encode which is 4.5mbs.

My viewings on Brazil start out at one bar, then a few seconds later go up to three bars.

Which is identical to how it streams with my CE device too(LG BD390).

Top speed in Amadeus is 4mbs, top in Brazil is 9mbs.
That's why HDX viewing with Amadeus can nver be instant. It needs to download the title before viewing since the bitrate is higher than the speed it will downlaad at.

Does comcast give you greater than 9mbs sustained speeds, or is it using PowerBoost to give you the 12mbs on speed tests? With Power boost it initially gives you a higher speed then drops down to a much slower rate. When I had Comcast in 2007 I would hit 30mbs for the first 10 to 20 seconds because of PowerBoost, then it would drop down to 8mbs.
And depending on the time of day it would drop down from 30mbs to only 1mbs when alot of people on my node were online.

aaronwt makes a good point about cable speedboost when running a speed test on your network. If you'd like a better idea of what your actual download speed is over a longer period of time, trying running a sustained speed test by clicking on this link:

        Re: Speed Issues on Brazil

Thank you both. I was not aware of the speedboost issues and apparent false speed results. The 10-20 second test on speedtest.net is still showing 8-12mbs download speeds. This was the first time I had tried the longer test ---- it shows only 1.6mbs!!!!

This is Friday night and maybe my neighbors are all home and contributing high usage. Maybe I'll test higher later. . . . But, Friday night would also be a prime movie night.

So, it looks some talks with Comcast are in my future.

        Thanks again.

Or try these test download files that range from 4MB all the way up to 1GB.

          ftp://ftp1.optonline.net/

Even when I had a 50mbs connection I would always max out my download speed from those test downloads.
