Man I can't disagree with you more. There business practices, how they treat their employees here and abroad, as well as their positions on censorship and "familly values" is nothing short of disgraceful.

I invite you and all vudu subscribers to do research on this topic and make up their own minds.

      Walmart Facts

I've really enjoyed my Vudu account but this acquisition is really forcing my hand... there is a reason why people actually hate walmart. Just look at the references on the aformentioned wikipedia page; that's a wide variety of sources...The New York Times and Christianity Today? And from what I see they have already started their influence (Saying they will end the adult selection "immediately").

That's cool if you are on board. But please respect that past and current Vudu customers have a reason to give pause.

Yeah, there is nothing wrong with Walmart offering the lowest wages in the retail industry, using sweatshops in China, offering less than half their employees any kind of health insurance, drives down wages and increasing poverty in communities, forcing local small businesses to close, caring little for the safety of its workers, discriminates against women, and repeatedly braking child labor laws.

I always hated traveling to towns in the midwest that did not have a Walmart. Since there was zero competition the prices were always extremely high. Especially considering the low cost of living in the area. With Walmart prices are very reasonable. I will continue to use Walmart as one of my main shopping locations. And in the DC area there is no shortage of them. Even though the parking lot is littered with vehicles costing over $50K people know a good deal no matter what their income.

Walmarts business practices are no different than many other merchants. It's just that Walmart is much larger so they get all the flak.
Walmarts in my area pay wages in line with everyone else. and most businesses only offer insurance to full time people and people with a minmum number of hours a week. This is certainly not unique to Walmart

Well my last reply didn't get accepted for some reason...

but I agree whole heartedly with rstone. As do many others. There are some companies that participate in questionable international labor agreements (apple) or participate in mass censorship (blockbuster); but no one comes close to bringing it all together like good old walmart. They employee the second largest workforce under the federal government yet the majority of their employees are below the poverty line.

As their founder, Sam Walton said, '"I pay low wages. I can take advantage of that. We're going to be successful, but the basis is a very low-wage, low-benefit model of employment."

I don't mind paying higher prices if it means more business for America and my fellow Americans don't have to struggle. People's families (and this includes the Chinese sweatshops) aren't where I'd cut my budget.

Uh... if I worked at vudu I'd be polishing my resume right now. You guys are brilliant and I wish you all the best.

Re: Ugh- VUDU owned by WalMart now?

All big companies have problems. Microsoft, Exxon, Walmart and Kmart all have problems. In my view it is easy to blame a company for the 'stuff' they do wrong but what it really comes down to is federal, state, and local goverment oversight. If you allow a company to hire employees at record low wages, if you allow it to import materials made by chinese children, then you get want you have allowed. On top of that how about all the people who shop at walmart? Should not the blame on why walmart is allowed to do anything it is doing be blamed atleast somewhat on the consumer? If we as a people did not buy at walmart goods then they as a company would change thier business model. But we do buy them and then complain about big government oversight and how bad companies like walmart are? If you are expecting them to be saints then maybe you need to get a grip on capitalism and what it really is all about? It is we, the people, driving the policy of walmart just as america's drug problem is caused because we as consumers buy drugs so people in other places produce the drugs. I'm so tired of people blaming 100% places like walmart and not seeing that they are just a player, perhaps a successful one, in the USA market system. Real change comes from laws from people elected by us. So if you are tired of walmart or walmart buying vudu then do something about it, like get envolved with your local government. But please quit just complaining about them because they were succesful in the American Market.

Finally if you don't think the 'small business owner' is trying to build a company that makes money like walmart your kidding yourself. And if they do make it you can hate them too, while sitting on your couch!

I agree whole heartedly with this statement. That's why I can't help but smile as I see blockbuster on the decline and netflix on the rise.

I don't shop at walmart. I'd rather not have than to give to them.

I will use the remaining amount on my VUDU account. And then I will close it. It really makes me sad because the alternative isn't as good technically, but it is morally.

Oh and that's true we should watch all companies like hawks. When Google says their mantra is "Do no evil." We should see what they define as evil and hold them to it. No one should get a pass.

And, I for one, don't discriminate on size. I have decided to not support local stores that I feel engage in unfair business practices in my area. As everyone should. Beware fallacious rationalizations! Just 'cuz everyone does it doesn't make it right!

Anyway I think I've said enough. Good luck everybody.

Re: Ugh- VUDU owned by WalMart now?

Everyone always seems to whine about how Walmart treats their employees. I just don't get it. They're employees, not slaves. If they think they're being mistreated then they can always go elsewhere....and after a year or two at Walmart, they have something to put on their applications to help them go elsewhere. Walmart career employees are reasonably well paid and have access to benefits. Hourly employees are short term and meant to be disposable. That's the way it is in retail.

I'm a retired retail owner myself. I never paid anyone a penny more than minimum wage besides management and didn't even provide benefits to management. My hourly workers weren't raising a family, they were saving up to rent a limo for taking little Suzy to the prom or to get a car by their senior year. Most of them were more concerned with the discount than the wages. My management staff was well paid and could afford their own unsubsidized insurance (through our group coverage) if they wanted it. Many of them had insurance from their spouses (we're in an area with heavy government/military employment) and didn't need it anyhow. I could have paid my management staff less and provided benefits that would be wasted on most of them, or paid all of them a higher wage and let them take responsibility for their own care.

fugue-as you can see from a couple of posts you can talk to you're blue in the face how Wal-Mart is NOT like everyone else because it won't do any good as too many rationalize their little bubble they live in.

Even strictly from a consumer point of view I don't get the appeal of Wal*Mart. Competing retailers offer a better a better buying experience at competitive prices.

I particularly like the last part of this post "let them take responsibility for their own care"...When has this country gotten to the point that employers are OBLIGATED to provide good wages and benefits to employees, otherwise they are bastards? Walmart is a BUSINESS, it exists to make a PROFIT, not to provide benefits...

If employees there feels it's so bad a workplace, WHY ARE THEY STILL THERE?? there are other places where they can find employment....In terms of using sweatshops, they are not the only business to do so...I can think of a famous athletic shoe manufacturer that young people pay $100 for a pair of shoes that may have cost a fraction of that amount to make...We, as individuals, have CHOICES we have to make in our lives......If you don't like Walmart, shop somewhere else...There is a REASON it is the #1 retailer in the country...

For myself, i will continue to support VUDU as I have since it's inception, until the day comes that it does not meet my needs....I just hope Walmart makes the decisions necessary to keep me as a customer.....We shall see.....

It really depends on the store. Like any chain, all stores are not the same. The Walmarts near me provide clean looking stores, very friendly employees and a good buying experience. And the prices are lower than the other retail stores near me. The other retail stores in the area have higher prices and provide a lesser buying experience. Which is why my two main stores I shop at locally are Walmart and Wegmans.
They both provide a consistently good buying experience with low prices.

And walmart also has a much better return policy than most retail stores. I can return an item within 90 days with no issues. Best Buy is only 30 days and other retail stores are only 60 days. And walmart never hassles me with a return like Target sometimes has in the past, which is another plus for Walmart and a negative for Target.

I was just recently in Carlsbad, New Mexico and we needed a DVD player to hook up to the TV in the hotel room. Walmart was the only place I could even think of to buy one so we went there. I must say that the shopping experience was much better than I have found at the Walmarts in San Jose. The person who helped me was very friendly and very helpful. He seemed quite happy to be working there. I just thought I'd mention it.

This was a very depressing piece of news, both as a once Vudu dealer as well as a regular user. I have no desire to give Wal Mart my business, and the fact that they take over and immediately cancel the adult portion of the movie choices is embarrassing. They may not realize this, but some adults actually own a Vudu. Thank you for being our babysitter, Wal-Mart.
I, for one, will never use this product again, nor will I recommend it. Sad, because it is the best streaming video product on the market.
