    VUDU & NETWORK NEUTRALITY

On Tuesday, April 6, 2010, the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia rejected the FCC's attempt to impose network neutrality on Comcast and other ISPs. See Albuquerque Journal article: http://epaper.abqjournal.com/Olive/O...&view=ZW50aXR5

How does this ruling affect VUDU, Netflix and other video streaming services?

Consider: the cable companies are in direct competition with Vudu, et al with their on demand video. Clearly, some antitrust concerns. If, as I have, Vudu's Comcast customers are having streaming problems - see "VUDU Not Ready for Prime Time" - could the answer could be Comcast is discriminating against Vudu's Web site? What say you? Kerry

I was wondering the same thing. I hope they can find a way to preserve the neutrality. It just seems patently unfair that your ISP could arbitrarily constrict traffic that you want to the point where the service you were accessing became unusable. I have Comcast business service now and have no problems so far. I hope it stays that way but who knows.

      Re: VUDU & NETWORK NEUTRALITY

Unlike content providers (including VOD and physical media), a huge majority of Americans have no choice in broadband providers. It seems patently obvious that they shouldn't be allowed to limit what content they carry or (for the most part) how they prioritize it, since their customers cannot just go get access elsewhere.

        Re: VUDU & NETWORK NEUTRALITY

Yeah, this ruling said nothing about fairness nor did it take that into account. It was simply a ruling that said the FCC didn't have the authority to make and enforce the rule. Hopefully something can be done to fix that.

Here is good article on what Network Neutrality really is:

Here is a more mainstream analysis: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn...040802554.html. The interesting part is that the FCC still has recourse to regulate broadband carriers to keep them from impeding consumer choice by recategorizing those services into a more heavily regulated category.

              Re: VUDU & NETWORK NEUTRALITY

The Washington Post article is informative but limited. An issue of concern is that Comcast is also a digital cable provider in direct comptetition with Vudu, Netflix, and other video streaming services. Comcast is now in the process of requiring all of its subscribers to use their settop box for digital cable services instead of the QAM tuners required in all HDTVs. If Vudu's HDX is as good or better than Comcast's On Demand HD, why buy expensive premium cable services? e.g. I have only basic analog cable service and only because it makes Comcast's internet service cheaper. Clearly, Comcast has an incentive to limit customer's access to Vudu's HDX movies. Because I have had a problem streaming Vudu's programming, even SD, I am currently working with Vudu to determine whether it is a Vudu problem or a Comcast problem. See: 'Vudu Not Ready for Prime Time'. If it is a Comcast problem, it may be a result of the shifting Vudu's content to a 'slower lane'. If this is the case, I have a problem with Comcast's non-disclosure of this 'shifting' of my access to Vudu.
I'm glad to see that Google, Microsoft and others are on the Net Neutrality side of this battle because I just want to stream high quality video and selected programming(e.g. FOX NEWS), some of which may come from Google, Microsoft, Amazon, etc. I don't want to be forced to buy a lot of useless, to me, cable tv channels and settop boxes just to do so.
