    More Competitive Pricing to Come?

    I was reading an article in regards to Apple TV/iTunes movie pricing:

    Apple divides their collection of movies into 2 categories:
    1) New Releases
    * SD: $3.99
    * HD: $4.99
    2) Library Content
    *SD: $2.99
    *HD: $3.99

    Vudu meanwhile divides their collection into only 1 category:
    1) Library Content
    *SD: $3.99
    *HD: $5.99

    It seems as if Apple offers much more competive pricing.
    Let's say both companies offered Scarface in HD. I could pay $3.99 with Apple and $5.99 with vudu... Is vudu expected to lower pricing or offer discounts anytime soon?

    I've seen older HD titles on Vudu for $3.99 so it's not just $5.99 across the board on Vudu as well.

      I thought vudu has 99 cent rentals too.

        Very true, not to mention the free rentals that are rotating through the classic movie catalog.

          Although vudu offers free rentals, they are for poor movies.

          I don't know. I just feel like vudu's pricing is a little higher than expected.

          Additionally, I was at Blockbuster early this month. My family rented the movie 'Blonde Ambition' somewhere in late Jan./early Feb. With vudu you have to wait until Mar. 7. Why is this?

          Don't get me wrong. I love the convience factor. It truly is awesome. But it def. has some flaws including the pricing and rental process.

            When I cataloged the HD movies the vast majority of them (58 out of 74) were $3.99 (SOURCE). As the catalog has grown that ration seems to have remained pretty consistent. Personally I'm very happy that most of the HD rentals are $3.99

              VUDU pricing seems to be the same as the pricing on FIOS for VOD.
              Although VUDU puts FIOS VOD to shame. For SD VUDU beats FIOS hands down. Not sure about HD yet since they haven't officially launched HD VOD it in my area yet. Only a few titles occasionally for their testing.

                My biggest issue with the pricing is the 24 hour viewing period. I have had to rent some movies multiple times as my schedule is frequently interrupted and I have to pause my movie viewing.

                So I am finding myself trudging back to Blockbuster or still using Netflix to get movies that give me more time to view.

                I don't like the feeling I get paying twice for a movie just to see it once.

                The movie viewing period should be 3-5 days.

                  I think 28 to 30 hours would work perfectly to cover two evenings of viewing. I don't understand why the providers don't switch to that. It would definitely increase the revenue since many rentals are not made if you know it will take two evenings to view it and it's only a 24 hour rental period..

                    Re: More Competitive Pricing to Come?

                    Vudu offers the same or better pricing than Apple for all categories except for New Releases in HD (Vudu is $1 more). Vudu SD rentals are $0.00-3.99 (0, 0.99, 1.99, 2.99, 3.99, I think) and HD ones $3.99/5.99. Yes, it would be nice to have Vudu offer same deal on HD New Releases.

                    With regards to 24-hour watching period, I don't like it either and was forced to re-rent too, but it's the same on every platform (ATV, Vudu, 360). However, we did find out recently that AppleTV allows you resume watching a movie even past 24-hour period as long as you kept it paused and didn't leave it. One of the mods put in a request for Vudu to implement this feature so maybe we'll see that on Vudu too.

                      A things to add.
                      I was browsing through the catalog and I did notice that some older SD were in fact $2.99 (not a ton, but some).

                      Additionally, I think the 24 hr viewing period is a bummer as well.

                        Not all of them. I've seen some classic movies with actors like Humphrey Bogart and Gregory Peck for free...

                          I'm enjoying Night of the Living Dead under the free Horror classics, but I have to agree that the selection of quality of the free selections could use some improvement.

                            The Inspector General starring Danny Kaye was wonderful. I'd never seen it before, but I saw it was free, and Danny Kaye is fun to watch in almost anything. I'm going to pay to rent it again so the whole family can watch it together. Now I have to go check to see if VUDU has "A Funny Thing Happened On the Way To the Forum", which is a great movie, but I haven't seen it in ages.
