I guess I notice the improvement from normal TV/VHS to DVD more than I notice the different between DVD and HD. Not that there isn't a difference. For TV, I really can't stand non-HD any more but I'm still ok with SD/DVD video quality.

But thanks to the one gentlemens post with his Sony TV display settings problems, I went to Sony's site and they had a great explanation of 24 FPS. I'm now convinced that for movie content that's the only way to go and my next LCD will need 120 HZ with 24 FPS support before I buy it.
Sorry we've not been able to explain it better. I'm learning all this stuff too. 6 months ago, I had no idea what 3:2 pulldown was and so forth. To me, full frame video was 30 fps! So how much Vudu has expanded your horizons!

It's seriously been fun learning it and thanks for all the questions you guys pose so that it challenges us all!

Here is a good thead on AVS Forum that deals with 1080p24. There is still a lot of confusion about this and even on which pannels support it and how they support it. Its a good read.

Thanks, that is interesting stuff. Also glad to know I'm not the only one that's not an expert in all this new and exciting technology.

Trying to figure it all out is way more fun than doing crossword puzzles, but really glad I don't have to do this any more for a living!

              Hi all,

I just found this thread and thought I would chime in. Please let me know if there are additional question, but to answer a few quick ones:

It just seems odd that there isn't more discussion about it. Although there seems to be criticism about VUDU not outputting DD+ yet, you would think there would be more complaints about titles that are only in Stereo. Sigh......
I didn't being this up because this was more of an overview of their capabilities, and since both units are capable of a max 5.1, there wasn't much more to say. I must admit that I did not do an auditing of the number of titles offered by each in 5.1 vs. Stereo, assuming it would be about the same, but judging by your comment this should have been examined further.

Yes, there are several different profiles one can choose from when encoding H.264 video.

Apple TV lists directly on their specs page that they use "Main Profile" for iTunes purchased content. For VUDU, I was in contact with their PR department who was funneling questions from me back and forth.

                Hi Shane,

                Nice to see your comments.

As to the 5.1 vs. Stereo thing, it is a bid deal because on the SD front, AppleTV has no DD5.1 movies. All SD movies from Apple are in stereo only. Vudu has a lot of stereo titles in SD but they also have a lot of DD5.1 titles in SD as well.

I would not only say SD but HD as well. There are a lot of ATV HD titles that are also in stereo only.

Right but ATV and Vudu both have that problem with HD. Not all titles are in DD5.1

But the big differences is in SD where ATV has a big fat goose egg of DD5.1 titles.

Isnt Apple TV also able to connect to your local computer to access your Itunes Library??

If so thats another plus for Apple TV where the VUDU is a video only machine, so to get streaming audio with VUDU thats another box you must buy...audiorequest, Escient, and Ipod and others, Price 300-3000+

Just another thing to look at besides video

The VUDU does seem nice since you can buy the movies though..but then again I prefer to own a hard copy of the movies that I buy. I usually only watch them once, or a few more times once on HBO or showtime then they can goto my DVR

Dont know...I havent had either in my hands to demo or see how each on works...time will tell

Yes. It is. But accessing that library is initially very, very slow particularly with a large library. The reason is that the XML file that lists all the content in the library is sent over first and the ATV has to build the menu structure. It takes me somewhere up to 2 minutes to load my library. You can sync content from your library to your ATV and local content works faster but the default 40 Gig drive is very small for holding much of anything...

True, but if you are like me, you already have multiple streaming audio devices!

If you want to demo a Vudu go to a local Tweeter or Magnolia (not the ones in Best Buy) or other high end shop that carries the Vudu (you can find a list of retailers on the Vudu website). Or better yet, buy a box and test it out. You have 30 days before you have to return it. I'll bet you won't return it.

We have it on the feature request list to have Vudu be able to attach to your media library. I don't know when or if it will be implemented but it's a pretty popular feature request and Vudu has been pretty good at listening to customer feedback and implementing customer requested features.

                              Thanks for the info.

we dont have any big retailers here except Circuit city and I wont go close to them.

Guess im still on the fence as I dont have much for audio sources so being able to access my Itunes would be a plus, but im sure I cant play a movie and listen to music at the same time either as there is only 1 set of outputs. I guess a Vudu and an Ipod dock would work

                              it does look interesting

You can also stream itunes music to Apple TV. Just play any song, play list, etc. and select AppleTV from the drop down list on the lower right of itunes. The music then streams to your AppleTV.
