    HD-DVD's Dying Gasps

Looks like HD-DVD is about to go the way of Betamax. I read an article today about how Blockbuster is backing Blu-Ray now and also I just saw that Walmart is doing the same.

Interesting point is that I've always heard that Blu-Ray is better yet this guy from CNBC article that I read this morning says that HD-DVD has better picture and sound. The sound part makes me scratch my head since both have all the new Dolby or DTS sound formats and there should really be no difference in audio quality.

Anyhow, it looks like the market is rapidly deciding which player format survives...

Engadget just officially put HD-DVD on deathwatch. Their deadwatch isn't super-reliable (TiVo's been on d/watch since 2005), but I think they are correct. The writing is on the wall and the demise of HD-DVD is coming at ever increasing pace -- with every new negative announcement, there's less incentive for remaining supporters to stick around.

I have both, blu and HD, and personally I liked HD better. Especially with the combo discs. I also felt the load time was much faster with HD and even with a gen 1 player, you had all the features, however with blu ray, you have to get a newer player to do the new features.

If VUDU would just have better quality HD content available for purchase and download and ability now for more space, I would scrap both blu and HD and stick only with VUDU.

More space via your own USB hard drives is coming eventually - I can't say how soon, but hopefully soon enough to keep the Vudu owners happy. As for purchasing HD, we know that Vudu has the infrastructure in place to support this (i.e. the Bourne series), so it really comes down to how soon the studios will allow it (right now all other HD titles are rental only).

It still needs to be a higher quality. Closer to HD DVD or Blu ray. There should be 2 choices, one quality for immediate download watch now, and a higher quality for watch later. I would not think this would be that hard to accomplish, as it has to do with encoding and would probably bring in more customers if they could match the quality of the disc without it.

I totally agree with you and rest assured that this was discussed already, so I hope Vudu folks listen to us. Probably not going to happen very soon though.

Soon, very soon -- "here is an extraordinary meeting of Toshiba?s board of directors early this week, and the exit plan is expected to be decided at that meeting." (from TiVo Lovers blog)

Actually, that was Best Buy. Blockbuster has long been a Blu-Ray supporter.

Blockbuster still rents HD DVD online and at 250 brick and mortar stores.

Great. It's the modern day equivalent of betamax or the LaserDisc. Up until a few years ago, I could rent/buy LaserDiscs at a local Blockbuster.

Hmm... actually, Blockbuster was only supposed to stock Blu-Ray in the stores, but it's possible some stores kept HD-DVDs.
