    Who's Responsible?

I purchased a Toshiba BDX2500 because it streams vudu|apps and Netflix, and a couple of other things like Blockbuster and Pandora; I could care less about the Blu-ray aspect of it because I have another BD player handling that duty. There are issues with the player and Toshiba has not acknowledged them or has never offered new firmware. My only alternative is to return it (the 2700s have the same issues) and get a Vizio player. Besides being a Blu-ray player it's a streaming device and if any company is planning on selling streaming devices, they better step up and be ready to actively support it for at least 2 years.

Now here's the dilemma. Toshiba manufactured and sells the hardware. The vudu and Netflix streaming services are available from the device but the respective companies are only providing the service. Now who is responsible for updating these services? Does Toshiba have to provide every update for each service they're packaging with their device? Are the service companies able to push updates to their portion of their applications on the devices to add a feature or fix a flaw?

I'm pretty sure the answer is the equipment manufacturer, and this is a bad news for consumers because companies like Toshiba are in the business of selling new hardware every 6 to 12 months and not maintaining "other peoples problems" (read: streaming providers) for the next 2 to 3 years. Toshiba would rather you buy a new player with the update, or as they would call it "new feature", than expend resources when they can just make more money from the consumer by forcing them to abandon perfectly capable hardware.

I don't want an HTPC, Boxee Box , Google TV or hook up my notebook to my HT. I just want a dedicated device to stream vudu and Netflix w/1080/DD+ that will be supported properly. Adding Slacker to that mix would be a bonus but unfortunately sony is the only player with that stream available.
