Older 80s/90s movies in HDX (but aren't even on blu ray)... how?

    Older 80s/90s movies in HDX (but aren't even on blu ray)... how?

    I just discovered vudu today via my PS3. SUPER impressed so far ? especially combing through the extensive library that is available in HDX. Quality looks incredible on new titles in HDX :-)

    My question is, I love campy older movies from the 80s/90s and have noticed that many of them are available in HDX. This seems confusing to me that they are in 1080p when the films themselves haven't even been released by their studios in bluray / hd format. Such titles include Death Becomes Her (my fav haha), She Devil, Beatlejuice (tho maybe that has been transferred to blu ray by now). Anyways, you get the idea. It seems fishy to me... I mean, are studios actually providing these films to VOD services in 1080p but not bothering to release the films in this resolution on physical formats?? Or is vudu simply res'ing up and calling things HDX as a sales tool?

    HDX is not a sales tool, you have to look at economics. Based on the title it may be a better fit to distribute the movie on VOD vs. Blu-Ray. Myself I enjoy horror movies from the 50's to the 80's and basically most of these couldn't justify their release on Blu-Ray but the content owner can release a copy to VUDU that meets the high quality standards of HDX.

    HDX is more than just DD+, 1080p, etc. HDX preserves the film grain of the content where the director decided to take that route for their movie. Look at the movie PI, I don't know if it was released on Blu-Ray but its quality in HDX is exactly as I remember this movie when it was at The Music Box Theatre in Chicago.

        From what I understand, Vudu is provided with the original source film in some format and encodes the digital version themselves (although they must obtain a separate license for each encoding). This is why when there is an issue with the content itself they can usually re-encode it very quickly. So it is not dependent at all on the studios or previous encoding of that movie (except maybe for licensing).

          if any, are the differences between the HD 5000 series and HD 6000 series - specific to Blu-ray 3D support? What if any limitations are there for the 5000 series in this regard, and how are they addressed?
