Vudu Now has 99 HD Titles for Rent

    Hey Gang,

Vudu now has 99 HD titles for rent or available to rent soon. It's beginning to grow into quite a list.

Not on my box. I wonder if my database wasn't up to date last night.

I still had 91 HD titles to Rent.

I really wish there was an easy way to see what has been recently added. A separate sorting option for date added to Vudu would be great.

That 99 number included titles that were coming soon in the weeks ahead but not yet available. That's why I said "for rent or available to rent soon."

ATV promised over 100 HD titles by the end of Feb. Wonder how they are doing?

I haven't figured out a way to tell without handcounting each one on there site (which I'm not about to do). It's easy to figure it out on VUDU because the search engine returns a count of hits. It's the little attention to details like that which make it a better product.

I think more important is how many titles will Vudu have down the road that aren't available on Blu-ray? They can't win in quality and at this point the convenience factor isn't strong enough to win me over (I'm aware of its advantages from using a Apple TV (mainly for music)). Only exclusive movie content will.

I think you bring up a good point. I am going to assume that all movies going forward are going to be released in BluRay. So that would leave us with older movies. If that's what you are interested in, I think Vudu has an edge here over BluRay. There are already a number of older movies from the 60s, 70s and 80s that are available. I doubt any of these are on BluRay and I doubt many of them ever will be. I expect that older movie list in HD to grow on Vudu.

There are a few movies that are HD on the VUDU that aren't on HD-DVD or Blu-Ray. I found another one today. Its called Bug, also there is the Star Trek moives, and popeye.

Re: Vudu Now has 99 HD Titles for Rent

I was already to order a Vudu for my theater after using an Apple TV in my den figuring the image quality would be a little better until I thought of what would I be viewing.

In there I pretty much just watch movies and the convenience factor isn't a big deal since I don't use the theater often. I decided if I can get the same movies via Blu-ray I'd rather view them via Blu-ray for the improved quality.

So until I get the impression they will offer unique HD content (new releases for me) I decided to hold off. Now if they come out with a monthly rental plan (before Apple does) I'll order one for the den. For casual rentals downloads are hard to beat.

I doubt that Vudu will have any unique HD content that isn't on BluRay. While a format war was going on there was always a chance that some studio would opt to put an HD movie out in neither format, but not now. BluRay is now the standard and in probably the next 18 to 24 months will completely replace the standard DVD. I'm not going to try to snow you and tell you that perhaps there will be some unique content. I have no clue what the arrangements are between Vudu and the studios, but I can't imagine a studio not putting out BR versions of every film from this day forward.

Popeye??? That's proof that the studios took too much LSD and Grateful Dead back in the 70's. That explains all the WIERD stuff they do.

The Four Feathers is another one. I watched it last night.

Most people don't even have an HD set. I would be shocked to see BD even come close to replacing DVD in 18 to 24 months, if ever.

Yeah, but you see this is all changing rapidly. 12 months from now, there will be no incentive for JC Penny to sell 480i TVs as no broadcast TV will be in SD any longer. Of course, sell anything places like JC Penny and WalMart may continue to sell such sets on the unsuspecting public. But will manufacturers continue to make them long term? I doubt it.

So people will start buying HD sets because that's all that will be available. Second BR players can play standard DVDs. Third, I image in that BR players have SD outputs. So there's really no reason other than cost ones to produce standard DVDs any longer. Once the cost of the BR players drop, there's no need to produce two sets of discs.
