    Uh oh!!

Has anyone heard about Comcast or any other cable providers that offer HD VoD services that are going to start offering movies for purchase?

"Also coming down the pike is the ability to buy movies from your cable provider and store them either on your set-top DVR box or store them with your cable provider just like any online storage service offers free capacity today, according to Cai."

That is a direct quote from an article here. Something like this could really spell trouble for independant HD VoD companies like Vudu. I hope Vudu is able to weather this storm!

    Re: Uh oh!!

It's not a problem. This was announced back at CES. First of all, Vudu is going to have a much larger selection of movies than cable VOD. Second a cable VOD will allow you to watch an HD movie on VOD the same day it is released by allowing the user to purchase a physical DVD of the movie. So in other words, the act of viewing the movie will charge a purchase against your account. A day or two later, a disc shows up at your door. I believe that while you may watch the movie in HD, the disc you get is a standard DVD (ie: not BluRay.).

Any new and creative capabilities in the VOD market is good for Vudu. The more money the studios can make from it, the better it will be for everyone. It's a nascent market and it needs as much revenue generation as possible. Vudu is a winner because the HD picture quality is better than cable VOD (at least I feel that way), the sound is better and the selection is better. Plus not everyone has cableTV service.

Cable VOD has always offered a strong pull. It comes with your cable subscription, there's no extra hardware to buy, etc. But it has very limited choices and viewing capabilities.

I chose Tivo over Comcast's VOD. I couldn't live with the Comcast DVR. I'm glad Vudu came along because now I get the best of both worlds.
