Well if you shared a pint then there will be no reprimand.

Just go to appletvjunkie.com. They list all movies by HD and SD and by genre. They update the HD selection that is available daily. I wish Vudu had something like this. Since I am on the computer every day, I can easily check out this site and make a quick decision on if there is a movie that I want to watch during the evening.

I don't buy movies so it doesn't matter to me, but I'm still scratching my head over the seperate placard requirement.
Yes, but that argument "contractual obligations with the studios on showing certain films (ie: if we put this movie up for rental, then you must show users this other film that is purchase only)" is speculative. Perhaps (and purely speculative, mind you) Vudu makes more money on a movie that is purchased rather than rented and that is the real reason they do not have a separate placard? I'm still scratching my head as to why anyone would not see the benefit of separate placards!

I still love my Vudu, but the user experience could be improved, such as:
        • separate "rental" and "purchase" placards
        • a list of all available movies on the Vudu website

The website thing is definitely something that would be nice to have. But that takes a lot of work to do and I'm going to blame it on Vudu's size. Apple is just an enormously larger company. However, that list of movies is not even generated by Apple, but by a third party. It sounds like someone has too much time on their hands! Someone could do it for Vudu...

As for separate placards, the truth is that Disney required it on Vudu. I know this is a fact as I've been told this by multiple people inside Vudu. Why they wanted it that way, I have no clue. I'm also confused as to why you feel this is something that is an enhancement to the UI. That's OK if you like it that way, but most people want one placard for purchase, rental, SD and HD. What is it about separate placards that makes things easier for you? Maybe it's something no one has thought of...

No this is not speculative. For example "Film Chest" with hundreds of videos in their library can't secure all for VOD rental but have already secured purchase rights. For them it makes sense to require the entire catalog be presented vs. cherry picking and leave it up to the renter / purchaser of what they would like to do. Its all about generating the revenue and keeping the expenses of this revenue stream low.

You may also want to look at other "contractual" publishing of video content. In the early 90's Turner networks were notorious for making sure that not only did a cable system carry CNN but also his other networks and had managed the contracts to make sure that his networks were at the "top" of the channel lineups. ABC / Disney does the same with their Disney and ESPN sports channels.

This happens also in the retail chains on store displays. Not only does the chain have to carry the latest DVD releases but the distributors also put in "must display" rules with other content that is sitting in the warehouse. Best Buy and WalMart does this all the time.

So the pattern is there and we are experiencing it first hand in the VOD world.

Viacom does the same thing as well. Back a few years ago, they had a contract dispute with Echostar. Viacom required that all of their channels be carried if the operator wanted any of them. And I think they required that they all be in a certain package or something like that. Echostar didn't want to offer some of the channels as they weren't popular. The end result was that all Viacom channels (including CBS affiliates) were pulled from Dish Network for a few days. I remember it well since most of my TV shows are on CBS. It's one of the things that started to sour me on Dish Network...

My mistake. I meant it would be great to have a way for the user to set up the Vudu interface so that it automatically only displayed rentals. I should have looked up "placard" before I posted. Filters are nice, but still a bit of a hassle.

FWIW gang, several of us in the "beta tester" pool have officially posted this topic as a formal feature request. We'll let you know what the Vudu engineers response is when it happens. For now, it has not been accepted, and only time will tell if we can persuade the designers to accomodate what seems to be a reasonable request. So, please stand by.

I've heard that this feature will definitely be included in the "World Domination" version, coming out YTBD.

Vudu has 10x the number of movies (if Macworld article is correct), so at the least it'd have to be a wiki-style site so everyone could pitch in.

But I don't know if we should even start thinking about hand-indexing >5,100 of titles. It'd be much, much easier for Vudu to provide this information themselves. If Vudu doesn't want (or have resources) to put this section on their site, then perhaps mods could get periodical (weekly - ?) dumps of listings & details (rent/purchase, price, rent on date, genres, etc.) from Vudu in Excel or Access, and then we can put up AppleTVJunkie-like site, but only make it better, e.g. by using tags (for genres, SD/HD, rental/purchase, sound, etc.).

For all the hard work the gang is putting into this project, you should also ask for pool side service with Pina Colada's.
