10600 Kbps, but can't stream HDX or HD...

I'm using a PS3 slim and I'm baffled by these issues.

If I pay for a HDX movie, it constantly buffers and I end up just switching to HD. But now I decide to save a dollar up front and go straight to a HD rental, and I'm getting constant buffering and asking me if I want to switch to SD!

    On speedtest.net, I consistently get a 15750 Kbps result.

On Vudu's own speed test on the website, I get 10600 Kbps result on average.

On the PS3 Vudu app itself, it's always green for the most part and always recommends HDX.

If everything is telling me my connection is fast enough for HDX, why is it buffering every 2 minutes?

I make sure I don't have any data-intensive programs running at the same time I want to watch a movie, so I know there's nothing on that front.

Does pausing after buffering help at all? If so, what's the maximum 'real time' a Vudu movie buffers for? I mean, I don't want to pause the movie and go fool around on the net for 20 minutes if the movie is only going to be buffering for 5 or 10 minutes of that time.

I rented Apocalypse Now in HDX when it was a 99c daily deal. I had buffering issues for the first 10 minutes of the film, so I paused it, came back an hour later and it played through without buffering again. Yet, there are people here and on other forums who swear that Vudu does not buffer on pause at all.

Can we get a definitive answer on whether pausing helps?

Is it possible a future software update would let PS3 owners pause-buffer on to the internal hard drive to ensure uninterrupted streaming of HDX?

I don't get these issues with Netflix HD or Hulu Plus HD running on the same PS3 and network.

Sorry for the rant and questions, but I'm baffled as to whether it's something I'm doing or a network configuration or something that just isn't agreeing with Vudu specifically.

    I should clarify further...

My TP-LINK modem is connected directly to a Netgear WNDR3700 router by Cat6 ethernet cable.

My PS3 is connected directly to the WNDR3700, also by Cat6 ethernet cable.

The two movies I'm currently having problems with are 'No Country For Old Men' and 'Children Of Men', both purchased as HD (720p) rentals.

I just went on to Amazon VOD on my Roku and rented 'No Country For Old Men' as HD (720p), and it has streamed without any buffering at a picture quality at least equal to what I was getting on the Vudu rental (in between the buffering).

On the 'Children Of Men' rental, I even selected SD quality just to see how that ran. That too had buffering pauses, though not as many.

What could be causing this on Vudu that does not cause the same thing on Amazon, Netflix and Hulu Plus?

I love Vudu because of the HDX option, but that's of no consequence if I'm getting forced down to HD or worse.

      Hey Bridge,

It really won't matter how long you let it sit, It will not buffer ahead. There may be some fine tuning we can make to your network specific to vudu. If you would like to do this. Please send me a PM.

I wonder if things have changed in the year since Dan said that. My BluRay seems to buffer Vudu. There's a meter and everything!

I have the same exact problem with my PS3 on a 20mps download and 5mps upload. Can someone please help me with this?
