    Waiting for Movies to Download??

Got my Vudu about a week ago.

I have a question about download speed. I have rented 2 movies from you, one said it would start in 2 hours, the second was 45 minutes.

Your advertising says:" ? VUDU is movie freedom. Choose your movie and watch it immediately ? no waiting and no buffering"

    Why the wait?
My download speed on your tests measures 3100mbps.
Other speed test clock at 10700mbps using ookla speed test (same as your test)
    Why the big difference?

    I've got 15mbps FIOS.

Re: Waiting for Movies to Download??

Well, with your speeds, it should start downloading immediately. But the Vudu does learn the "quality" of your network connection. So it may take a couple rentals to get it fully up and running the right way.

One question I have is do you have a large amount of outbound traffic? If your upstream data pipe is swamped and you are not running QoS on your router, then it can cause delays in download speeds. The reason is that when the upstream is swamped the "ACK" packets can't get out fast enough to keep the download stream happy. The "ACK" packets are part of the TCP/IP overhead.

The second question is how the Vudu is connected to your network. Is it connected wired or wirelessly?

Third - what status are your lights on the front? Are they both green? Or is one red or yellow?

Fourth - Please make sure that you don't have "nice to network" turned on. In the advanced Network settings, make sure "prioritize Vudu bandwidth" is checked. If it is not, the box automatically drops the download speed in half. This setting is designed to be used only on networks with speeds between 1.0 and 1.5 Mbps.

I have a feeling you may have nice to network turned on...

Wow that is a very long response to a simple question., truth is the only thing to check is the nice to network option in network settings and yes rent a few movies and you will be able to have instant watching within a few days.

Well, as I typed I kept on thinking of more and more things for him to check on! So it got longer and longer. Nice 2 Network should have been the first thing but I thought of it only after typing everything else!

I'm sorry, I didn't mean for that to sound like a negative comment, I was just trying to simplify the answer for him. my apologies.

I had instant viewing with the first movie I rented. That was only a couple of hours after I plugged the box in. I have rented several movies since then and they have all been available instantly as well.

                your lucky I guess,
well my experience was, no instant access for the first couple of days and then instant access ever since. I did have to change the network settings though.

Maybe when it did the test for your box, it thought the network wasn't up to it and set the box to "nice to network". I did not have to change any setting on mine and I saw it was a full speed.

                    No.

                    wired.

                    Both Yellow

I don't have an option in Advanced Network Setting for "nice to network" or "prioritize Vudu". Only selections are "Auto Configure network address" and "Manually define network address"

                      Matt,

Click scroll wheel on Info & Settings,

Click scroll wheel on Service Quality,

Click scroll wheel on Advanced Service Set-Up,

                      Select "Normal Bandwidth"

If you have a fast ISP, you will now have instant delivery.

BTW, I have seen several people say it may take several days and several rentals to start seeing instant playback. Is this due to marginal network bandwidth? I plugged in the second Vudu on my network (for my dad) yesterday and my dad immediately said "Let's try it out." He then proceeded to find and rent a movie and it began playing immediately and continued all the way through without a hiccup.

Re: Waiting for Movies to Download??

                          redwin,

It should not take several days for the VUDU to understand that the bandwidth of the internet connection is capable to supporting streaming. In inital setup it does a network test as a baseline. But there are some valid points to make.

Even if you have adequate downstream bandwidth if you are using up the upstream bandwidth the Bittorrent, VOIP, etc the VUDU will have to make a best judgment on how to work with this circumstance.

The VUDU continuously validates the usability of the internet connection and adjusts accordingly. In your fathers case the internet connection may have a different usage profile then when first VUDU tested the connection. Thus he got instant access.
