    IR support

    Hey guys,

Here's the list of supported IR remotes that will work with software 1.3.0.:

    Logitech Harmony
Universal Remote (also includes Complete Control and Home Theater Master products)
    Universal Electronics/Nevo
    Phillips Pronto

I have also attached the Pronto remote protocols in this zip file.

Do you know if there are any plans for the VUDU remote to support both RF & IR (like my Bose stereo remote does) ?

    Thanks in advance

Unfortunately, not in the immediate future.

What would it buy you? Are you thinking it would be cool to use that remote for other devices?

I misquoted my question but didn't pursue it, because I didn't think there would be any interest.

But to be more accurate, you can set the Bose to receive "and" transmit IR commands.

So if you set it to transmit, IR commands are transmitted, even though their remote is RF only.

This allows you to use their remote to set up and control other IR devices from the Bose box (i.e. IR blasting???).

But what it also does is transmit the equivalent commands for the RF buttons that you press on the remote.

So I've been able to program several different remotes that have "learning" capabilities to successfully control my Bose.

So my thought was that VUDU could support many more remotes if they had the capability to transmit IR commands for the equivalent RF buttons pressed on the VUDU remote.

Then you wouldn't be limited to or tied to suppliers that decide to support VUDU.

It's not an original idea by me, but it's something that I've actually done with success with my remotes that have learning ability to control my Bose equipment.

Hope that makes sense and explains my original (mangled) question.

          Regards

            Re: IR support

All that needs to really happen now is for someone with a learning remote to take a Harmony or Proto or other of the "approved" remotes and learn the IR codes. It's not a big deal. You can get a JP1 receiver and software quite easily on the net. Then you can learn the code and the program any JP1 compatible remote (many of the popular universal remotes are JP1 programmable - it's the little 6 or 8 pin connector in the battery compartment).

Vudu could also choose to publish the remote codes to just about anyone should they so desire. They had to start somewhere though and the easiest obviously is with those remotes that connect directly to the internet to get updates...

I have one of these remotes. Are there any plans to provide codes for these remotes like HEX codes or maybe templates to download? In other words having one of these remotes does not mean it just works so there has to be source codes somewhere...

Yep - I would think that the most logical next step would be for Vudu to publish the IR codes. That way almost any learning remote could be used.

I have an old Pronto sitting around that I never use anymore EXCEPT for programming in some IR codes that I need to teach to my Harmony 880 - especially some discrete IR codes that aren't already in the Logitech database.

The remotes listed in the OP have the Vudu IR codes available for download.

Much to my amazement, I pulled the batteries on my MX-500 and there is indeed a 4 pin connector there (1 pin is blank).

So are you saying that if I had the correct cable I could program my remote from my computer?

Try a Google search on 'program jp1 remote'

You can build your own JP1 compatible cable for a few bucks. You can buy one for under $10 (look on ebay and other discount sites).

Download from? I updated my URC software but did not see the vudu listed.

                        Thanks

It should be in the most recent code updates for any of the remotes. For the Logitech Harmony series, the Vudu is under Digital Set Top Boxes. I would look in there as well if you have that sort of thing with your remote.

I would expect to see some help files from Vudu pretty soon on setup. Call customer service in the mean time...

                            Re: IR support

I am using the Pronto 9600 remote.

When you get the IR dongle will it come with the CCF or XCF file so you can import it into the remote?
I do not find any files on the pronto website.
With the pronto remotes you download files into the Pronto edit software and incorporate the codes into the remote that way.
My remote also can handle the TCP protocol but I am not that good at java script and have not been able to get it to work that way.
I ordered the IR dongle and hope it is compatible with my remote.
The Vudu website only says compatible with pronto remotes.
They do not go into specific model numbers. I hope to be able to use the scroll dial on this remote with the IR codes.

I love that Pronto 9600 because it illustrates the beauty of a free and open market place. Some folks embrace it fully, others think you must be nuts to spend more on a remote than they are willing to spend on their TV monitor. Just like the Vudu doesn't have to be the movie delivery service for all viewers, the Pronto doesn't have to be the right remote controller for all users. As long as you build a good enough product to command a large enough user group, it doesn't matter what others think.
