A future AppleTV - The next DVR?

    Interesting story...

    http://www.marketwatch.com/news/stor...D&siteid=yhoof

I wonder if they'll really do this though...It would undercut the need for them to sell shows on iTunes. Still it would make the product far more useful...

I read the article and think that, while it is a logical move for Apple to add such features to the AppleTV product, I don't see it as a market mover. Cable and satellite companies don't make it easy to use DVRs that aren't directly from them. The AppleTV isn't nearly as cool if it's got two bulky DirecTV receivers or some CableCard box attached to it.

It could be a decent product. But unless they build the AppleTV with slots that can take CableCards or an announced but unreleased DirecTV receiver card it will be niche.

I agree, it needs a cable card slot or two.

Frankly, I find that a DVR based ATV is not likely. The lure of ATV is being able to purchase content that you missed on TV...

Plus it would need to be as good as a TiVo. No one has made a DVR as good a TiVo yet.

Yeah, we'd have to downgrade our ReplayTV's to make them as good as Tivo's...

Replay's intellectual assets are now owned by DirectTV...so its really going to suck once they pull out all the hacks the replay community put into replay that didn't make it suck so much.

              TiVo Rules!

My Replays will never ever get another software update. Why? Because I use software that prevents them...It's called WiRNS and w/o it all the cool stuff has already been disabled...

Ron - you know so little on this...

Plus it says in the agreement that DNNA will continue to service the existing customer base for the foreseeable future...

Yeah, Replay made a better unit. Can your Tivo send shows over the internet? Can you download shows from your Tivo in MPEG-2 w/o any additional purchases of equipment? Can your Tivo skip an entire commercial break automatically?

                  I didn't think so.

I can download the shows to a PC and AFAIK it's in MPEG2. No point in skipping over commercials entirely since they would be all over that to stop it. And the TiVo cant send shows ove rthe INterent but it can receive them. But also to send them at a good speed would take much more bandwidth than my 5mbs upload FIOS. It already seems to take an extemely lonng time uploading at around 4.4 mbs when I upload 100MB files to my domain. I can't imagine uploading several gigabytes. I'll probably upgrade to the 15mbs up soon because of this. Although I'll lose my great price of $55 for 30mbs down/5mbs when I change to 30/15.

First, I'm willing to acknowledge that ReplayTV is "dead", but that doesn't stop us ReplayTV owners from having more fun than other DVR owners. Now grasshopper, let's consider your comments/observations:

Yeah, that's one of the things that killed the ReplayTV parent companies - Replays do this automagically. It's hard to describe how sweet it is to have not seen a commercial for several years. It's something ReplayTV owner take for granted, and other DVR owners know it as the forbidden fruit.

And the TiVo cant send shows ove rthe INterent but it can receive them.
ReplayTV 4000 and 5000 series can and do send/recieive shows over the internet, it happens every day.

Your imagination is holding you back my friend. Between MaxH, Na9d, and myself, we have sent about 10,000 TV shows/movies to other ReplayTV owners - documented on www.poopli.com . It the last 2 weeks alone I have sent 40 shows to other ReplayTV owners. Despite the demise of ReplayTV manufacturing, ReplayTV owners continue to have fun. If you can live with SD video , you might want to pickup a ReplayTV 5000 series on ebay and get it on the fun.

I'm on the waiting list for FIOS in my community, can't wait for it to happen, and I'm happy for folks that already have it.

Getting back on topic, I don't think Apple is going DVR route since they want to make $$$ on iTunes.

                        P.S. TiVo rocks!

It's increasingly difficult for me to live with SD anymore. Since I started recording and watching HDTV in 2001 I have been watching SD less and less. Although to be fair since getting the VUDU my SD watching has jumped up, but aside from that there are only a few shows I still watch in SD.
