There is a big difference between SD TV programs and the SD movie quality on Vudu. I don't watch much SD TV any more and it always looks bad. The SD Vudu movies look great by comparison.

The biggest jump in quality seems to be in going from 480i to 480p. I think 480p content can look great...

I totally agree with that. After watching a few Widescreen movies I've suggested that VUDU claim their Widescreen SD content as DVD quality content. It is in fact so sastifactory that I will rent their SD version movies with DD5.1 over their HD version movies in stereo any day of the week. Plus I save 2 bucks too!

SD quality content suggests to me that it is 4:3 aspect ratio with mono or at most stereo sound.

I've also suggested that VUDU call their 4:3 formatted content as SD quality instead of "Full Screen". That term seems confusing as well.

I admire VUDU for trying to be humble and honest about what they offer, but we know Good Guys always come in Last.

Of the current shows, I think the only one I watch in SD is "Scrubs" (well and cable shows since I don't have HD cable yet). Since it's their last season, I guess they didn't want to pony up the money for HD equipment and such.

The term "full screen" is indeed confusing. But I think it's a term in the industry given that most TVs on the market are 4:3. And in that case, full screen is completely accurate.

SD is anything lower than 720p. And actually, if we really want to get picky and technical, Vudu doesn't have anything in SD. It's all in ED since non-HD Vudu content is at 480p. But audio quality doesn't play in at all when talking about resolution. Most DVDs produced today (sans BluRay, HD-DVD) have Dolby Digital sound tracks. Yet they are considered "SD" or at most "ED."

But to me, anything and everything in HD should be in DD5.1. It annoys me it isn't...

The SD shows I watch are in widescreen, plus I run everything through a VP50 pro video processor. Even at 480P its nothing near HD quality. And after watching HD since 2001, no SD content comes close. What used to look excellent only looks good now. In early 2002 I started using Video processors to upconvert the DVDs to HD resolutions and at the time looked excellent, but the more HD I watched the worse SD looked since there is no detail in SD when compared to HD.
Although I have watched more SD content recently on VUDU because it is so quick and convenient to do so.

I live down the street from their "studio", which oddly enough is an old local hospital that closed down several years ago. I remember them closing down, and then a bit later a sign went up with the slogan "the future of healthcare is coming...". Well, that stayed up for a long time, and then it got leased for production use. I remember thinking "if this is the future of healthcare, we're doomed".

So I have to imagine the cost of re-jiggering that place, unlike a studio lot stage, for HD would have been pretty huge.

There's a company that's just pacing in circles for them to finish production so they can build condos on the site.
