    Ad supported content?

I ran across this article and what stood out was the part speaking of Vudu plans to experiment with ad supported content. I am very interested as to if this is true or not.

    http://newteevee.com/2008/03/19/vudu...-options-open/

Vudu Steals Hearts, Keeps Options Open

Vudu was the audience favorite at a panel I moderated last night for the MIT/Stanford Venture Lab. CEO Mark Jung shared some of his ideas for the set-top box company ? which he said isn?t really a set-top box company. According to Jung, Vudu is willing to experiment with everything, save just two core things: the user interface and the ability to transmit high-quality video on the turn of a dime. He?s also unwavering in his belief that the future of content consumption will remain in the living room, on a big-screen TV.
Vudu is not the bastion of paid video some would assume; the company plans to experiment with ad-supported content as well, according to Jung. Not because its paid model isn?t starting to work: The service is notching an average of five transactions per month per user, he said. One particular customer spent $800 in a month on Vudu content! The company is also trying to eliminate the $295 it currently charges for its box by cutting deals to place them in hotels and elsewhere. And Jung said Vudu is also exploring deals to put its software into other companies? hardware.

Vudu will also open its platform, allowing outside developers and filmmakers on board. Careful not to alienate the Hollywood moguls he?s trying to corral, however, Jung allowed that ?in some cases the role of a studio is becoming undefined.?
But Vudu?s platform won?t be that open ? the company will always manually moderate the content it transmits. Jung (who was formerly COO of News Corp.?s Fox Interactive Media) justified the decision by telling a very funny story about when he worked with MySpace and asked every research outfit he could find to reliably differentiate between a peach and a certain anatomical part. His conclusion: Science just isn?t good enough.
Jung?s far-flinging promises of flexibility might smack of desperation, but it?s a hard market Vudu?s trying to get a foothold in. Despite audience enthusiasm, none of the VCs on the panel was sure Vudu was a good investment.
Jung, along with other panelists, said he sees only marginal opportunities for live and interactive video. Across the board, panelists said they thought on-demand was the inevitable future.
Apologies for the imprecise notes ? I was caught up moderating the panel. But it was pretty interesting to see the impact Jung?s demo had on the audience, many of whom, when I subsequently asked if they would buy a Vudu device, raised their hands. Too bad Jung didn?t have the credit-card processor available right then and there.

I can honestly say that I am not aware of anything imminent or planned. But then again, I'm not a Vudu employee and I have little foresight into what is down the road. I'm not surprised though that they are considering all their options. It's a wise move.

      Re: Ad supported content?

Finally, we get to hear something on potential long-term plans of Vudu.

I've suggested ad-supported content probably since the beginning of my Vudu experience. I don't know what Mark had in mind, but I'm thinking something like what Hulu does. I don't think I'd want to watch movies with ads, but I can stand to see a few ads during a TV show.

      This is very interesting too:

Vudu will also open its platform, allowing outside developers and filmmakers on board.
I hope this means that we might see more media extender functionality. Perhaps, developers will be able to make modules that add functionality, e.g. photo module, user video module, modules to watch web video (YouTube, Hulu, Netflix, network sites etc.) and so forth.

Although, since Vudu box isn't a PC (unlike AppleTV), it might come down to how much access developers have to APIs and stuff. From reading AppleTV threads, it seems that one of the reasons hacks do poorly with high-quality video is because they can't access ATV's H.264 decoder.

I have no problem with a few ads sprinkled into the content, as long as the price is adjusted lower.

With ads, it better be free!

I can think of two ways: ads before movies and 1-2 ads during a TV show. I don't think ads during movies would be acceptable.

I'd expect TV shows with non-skippable ads to be free and, perhaps, movie with preroll ads could be $0.5-1 less.

I read that today too and thought "hmmmm".

Would I watch free TV episodes with ads interspersed into them? Absolutely.

I am so used to fast forwarding through commercials with my Tivo that I would only find it acceptable if you could also fast forward through them on Vudu. If they were "non-skippable" I wouldn't consider it. For movies, if there are ads before the movie starts the whole benefit of instant play diminishes greatly. I would rather pay and get ad free content, just like I do with Sirius, etc.

This could be another one of those AND/BOTH situations. The Vudu could have BOTH - content with ads, and content without ads, priced accordingly. Let the owners decide. There's no reason why we can't have both available to the Vudu lifestyle.

I suppose if they did it as some preference setting that could work. I think it would be bad if either the UI got complicated because of it, or if some content wasn't available both ways.

I don't think studios give a darn about UI and user experience *cough* Disney *cough*

But this ad supported content sounded like something Vudu was considering, not something from the studios. I was basically saying that I hope Vudu doesn't decide to do something that makes the product not as nice to be able to offer cheaper content.

I think Rusdude was referring to Disney's requirement of separate rent and own entries in the DB as an example. I personally would probably never watch unskippable ads, even for free, as I've had ReplayTV DVRs on every TV for 4+ years now. But I would like to see a choice offered, ideally AFTER a show or movie is selected, to keep the UI from getting awfully cluttered *cough*disney*cough*.

                            Re: Ad supported content?

The idea of being able to watch a TV show when I want is what I like. Sure, my Replays skip commercials and all, but I still have to record the show. And yeah, if I miss it, I can have someone send me the show by requesting on Poopli. This is probably the biggest reason why I've purchased maybe 2 shows from iTunes. But I would be willing to have minimal adds for free viewing or pay something like 25 or 50 cents to watch a show once. I'd watch a lot more shows on demand via Vudu and AppleTV if I didn't have to spend $2 to "buy" them. I rarely watch a TV show more than once (classic Warner Bros cartoons are an exception! ).

My dream would be that Vudu would be able to provide all the shows for all networks (similar to ATV) but with a one time viewing charge of 50 cents or free with minimal ads (kinda like Comcast VOD has). I would seriously consider dumping most of my cable subscription!

To watch what you want, when you want and where you want is the future of television. Broadcast schedules are so passe.

I really like the "semi-push" model of cable or satellite with Tivo. That is, I set up my season passes and the shows just show up in my now playing list. In effect, that enables me to watch shows when I like as I really never know when a show is on or even what channel it is on anymore. I really don't ever want to go look for the latest episode of "House", for instance. I usually only know there is a new episode because Tivo detected it and recorded it. There would need to be something similar for TV shows over VOD before I would consider using Vudu (or any VOD service) to watch current TV shows.
