Apple TV Podcasts - Could Vudu do better?

Just thought I'd throw the question out there as I'm very interested in Vudu supporting podcasts:

Can anyone with an ATV comment on how well ATV handles podcasts (discovery, quality, etc.) and how they'd see it done better on the Vudu?

Re: Apple TV Podcasts - Could Vudu do better?

ATV does very well with Podcasts. First of all, there is just a tone of podcasts on iTunes. So they just have the lead. I was doing a number of HD podcast downloads in iTunes and them watching them on my ATV when I got bored. Some of the HD podcasts like Beautiful Places, HubbleCast, and a couple other NASA ones are quite good. I've enjoyed watching a number of these.

Now with AppleTV 2.0, getting the podcasts is even easier. You no longer have to subscribe to them and download them ahead of time. You can browse the podcast library and pick what you want to see and download it on demand.

Quality is variable. Some of the SD podcasts like Discovery Channel podcasts were obviously designed for the iPod and don't look so good on the big screens. I think they've begun to improve the quality of a lot of these with the advent of the ATV. The HD podcasts all look quite good.

How could Vudu do better? Speed perhaps. The podcast has to pretty much download completely before you can watch it. But ATV's UI and organization right now have an edge on Vudu when it comes to Podcasts. Look at the way Vudu does TV shows. It's not the best right now and the hierarchy of content needs to be improved. Same would go for podcasts as well. Vudu has a far better search capability than ATV. So that would be a major plus.

I hope Vudu does get some free content like this. Sometimes I like watching short items when I don't want to spend an hour or so watching something. For example, sometimes I'll watch the latest Hubblecast episode a couple minutes before I go to bed or something like that. If Vudu had free content like this, it would be really cool.

I agree that it is something that would be really great. Maybe this would also be a way to get some of that "extra" content you get with a DVD. For example, there's a Battlestar Galactica podcast on iTunes that goes with each episode of the show. So Vudu could do something like that. It's a wide open space.

Podcasts is probably what I use my ATV for the most...

The question I would have is who would maintain the list of podcasts that VUDU would use? There are so many podcasts out there and no one "concentrator" of them.

Also rating and quality of video podcasts are very important to me. I agree with Jon. Most of the video podcasts look really crappy on a large screen panel.

I know that behind the scenes Apple TV still uses the iTunes database from the Apple servers to access the needed podcast information (URL, Description, etc).

The other thing about it is that podcasts are generally free - they aren't revenue generators. Apple generates a large amount of revenue from iPod and iTunes sales. They can afford to maintain a large database of podcasts that can be played on any number of different devices. With Vudu trying to do the same thing, the podcasts can only play on one device - the Vudu. I really don't want to try to maintain subscriptions to podcasts in multiple places...

Again, I see the value of some of this stuff, but question how much value it would bring to Vudu.

Well, I still think that providing free content or allowing us to view/play our own media would mean that we would spend more hours with the Vudu on, which I think would mean we're more likely to think of it when we are ready to purchase content. The real issue is how to find podcasts that you want to download. I'd like to see an area in our online account where we can enter feed URLs that could be served to our Vudu for downloading. Then again, this is not high on my list; there are at least a dozen other features I'd like to see first.

Re: Apple TV Podcasts - Could Vudu do better?

To me, the ability to stream our own MPEG-2, MPEG-4, H.264, etc. content would be the best solution. You could then download whatever podcast you want and store it however on your UPNP or similar media server and the Vudu could then pull from it. To me that would be ideal...
