Netflix or Local DVD store or Vudu?

I am new to Vudu and I learned about this service after everyone got up on in arms about the Netflix reat hike. However after some research I am not sure that Vudu is a better deal at all.

Vudu streams new releases when the DVDs come out. Great! Come to find out to stream a new release in standard def costs $3.99. I noticed there are some older movies that are $2.00 but I am not interested in those for this discussion. Given our lifestyle we have time for about 4 to 5 movies a month.

So my local DVD rental store (it is an independent store) rents new releases for $3.00 - $3.49 provide they are available. Benefit here is that I can watch the movie the same day, unless they are out of copies to rent. I am also supporting a local business (always a bonus)

    So 4 movies @ $3.49 = $13.96

Netflix will charge me $7.99/ month for one DVD out at any time with no rental limits. Turn around is usually 3 days for a DVD (Sent one back on Monday, received Tuesday, new one goes out Tuesday afternoon, might have the new DVD on Wed at the latest Thur). So for arguments sake lets say that it takes 4 days.

    So 4 movies = $7.99

Now with Vudu I don't have to wait to get the DVD nor stand in line. However the price is more than double of what I am paying now.

    4 Movies x $3.99 = $15.96

In order for me to come over to the Vudu side (that has a certain ring to it ) I would need to see the new movie release prices get down to $2.49 for standard def in order to consider becoming a return customer.

    So how about it?

Vudu prices are inline with other VOD providers, Like Amazon, Apple, Xbox Live, PSN, Comcast, FIOS, DirecTV, etc.

For prices to be that low the studios would need to do it. And I really can't see that happening.

If you are only ever going to watch standard definition, then you are missing out on one of the biggest benefits of Vudu over NetFlix....HD and HDX over DVD/SD quality. Other items to consider is your time spent trucking back and forth to the rental store, or the fact that you only ever have 1 Netflix DVD to choose from at any given time (zero when the dvd's are in the mail) vs. the full Vudu rental catalog for VOD.

But if you are going to boil it down to a dollars and cents equation skewed towards NF, then that is probably the way you should go. Actually, for that viewing pattern I would suggest Redbox over Netflix to eliminate the monthly subscription fee and the wait time for DVD's to go back and forth in the mail.

If you need Blu-Ray discs, check out Blockbuster On-line, Their turn-around time is slower than NF, but you don't have to wait a month for new titles and they have more titles in HD than Netflix, as well as being cheaper! Plus, if there is a BB store near you, you can bring the mail disc to the store and get a new movie right away at no charge.

Vudu is a terrific accessory to discs. HDX picture quality is excellent. BUT...unlike discs, some titles are cropped (i.e. picture information is missing, such as the recent release UNKNOWN). But most are shown correctly. (Vudu allows a 2-minute preview so you can always check it out first.)

For me, Vudu, Netlfix, RedBox, Blockbuster, Hulu+, etc. all compliment each other. No one service has all the content. So I watch things from multiple sources to have the widest selection available.
