Why is there a 24 hr. viewing Window?

I just bought a Vudu and there's a lot that I like about it, but the deal killer for me might be the 24 hr viewing window. I know this is not the fault of Vudu, but the movie studios are to blame.

Can someone explain to me why they should have a problem with me starting to watch a rental today (that I've paid for) and then finish watching it tomorrow, or next week, or next month for that matter? Are they hoping to get a second fee for when we forget to finish watching within the 24 hr. window just like the rental stores love to get late fees when we forget to return a movie? I just don't get it. I also don't get why some movies are for purchase only, what's that all about?

VUDU is not alone in this 24hr viewing window. All VOD providers are constrained by what the content owners have put into their licensing agreements. Most of the independent movies have a 48 hour window though.

For the purchase vs. rental discussion read this post:

Welcome to VUDU....and let us know if you have any other questions.

Thanks Ron I understand that. What I don't understand is why? I've never heard a reason why they insist on this restriction.

I think the studios can't get over not having a reel of celluloid that they can keep under armed guard, so they're paranoid about their "property" being "stolen" if they "loan it out" for too long. Stupid, I know, but part of their business model involves suing their customers, so what do you expect?

(I do respect the idea of intellectual property...but I wish the studios would respect the idea of owning a license to use something as we see fit, as long as you don't redistribute it or otherwise deprive them of revenue.)

As you can see by the responses there are a lot of speculation but the only thing that seems to come to play is that they are concerned about copyright infringement. And with a play window of 24 hours it protects their content.

I for one would like to see an official answer also. But these decisions hide behind lawyers and their agreements.

Ron, I think you hit the nail on the head. However, it's much easier for content to be ripped from a DVD which I can have for days. Vudu content can't be pulled off the box, it's encrypted, etc. To me, they should embrace the new method like Vudu which minimizes the chances of copies getting out. But then again, IANAHL!

Bedbugs reside where the sun don't shine? No wonder why I itch there!

Re: Why is there a 24 hr. viewing Window?

I don't think piracy is the main reason for 24-hour window as Vudu is locked up pretty tight. It probably has to do with studios thinking that if they give people longer than 24 hours to watch a movie, more people will have opportunity to watch it, e.g. you watch it on your Vudu and then pass on your Vudu to your friend to watch (like you'd do with DVDs). Sounds silly but that's how they probably think.

FWIW, people on this forum had come up with a better solution. I forget the name of the thread, but I think the idea was to let you only watch the movie once and, maybe, allow limited rewinds to catch up on previous few minutes after long breaks...
