    HD question

    Howdy all,
I plan on purchasing a VUDU this week (my wife and I are very excited) but I do have a question. I read a review of the VUDU system in Maxim magazine and they loved it. It was their pick of the month if I remember right. However, they did say that the HD content did not look much sharper than the normal content. (This is not a make it or break it for me) I'm just curious what you all think. Those of you with HD tvs, could you say the HD content is equal to HD content from a HD dvd in a HD player?

    Thanks much,
    --Eryk

    Re: HD question

Hey, welcome to the board! The consensus seems to be that Vudu's SD content is near-DVD quality, and the HD falls somewhere between broadcast-HDTV and Blu-Ray/HD-DVD. There is often some faint macroblocking in some purely monochromatic parts of images, but not much blur on quick action scenes, which to me is more important.

The biggest issue is that you must use HDMI, not component, to get 720p, 1080i, or 1080p(/24 only) resolution. Vudu's contracts with the studios, ever paranoid about "perfect" digital piracy, prohibit anything over 480p via component.

We have some people here with 50", 60", even 100" screens who are all pretty happy with the images. As long as you're not expecting it to be better than Blu-Ray/HD-DVD, you will probably be quite happy. And the best part is...you pick a movie, you watch it, no waiting! Not only is it faster than selecting a DVD, how many people have 5000+ DVDs in their house? (Quiet, redwein. )

MaxH - thanks for the welcome and the information.

The way you describe the HD sounds perfectly acceptable to me. This is great news. Thanks so very much!!

        Re: HD question

I'll second Max's comments. The HD PQ is very good but it also depends on the source material. A movie like Transformers looks very, very good on Vudu. I've seen some of the other HD content and it looks good - better than SD, but not as good as you might think it could be. It's worth it and the picture is certainly equal to broadcast quality HD.

          Re: HD question

Welcome to VUDU. VUDU marketing says that the HD content is classifed as "Broadcast High Definiton". I find the VUDU HD image much sharper than the SD DVD content.
