Just bought my VUDU and now a bit nervous from some of what I've read...

    Howdy All,
I've been cruising the forums here on and off all day after purchasing my Vudu online. There is a ton of great information and in every aspect but one, I gett happier and happier the more I read. What I've recently been stumbling upon which has me a bit nervous is network use.
My household loves its broadband and uses it quite a bit. On a given day there are between 3 and 5 computers running, a tivo and a game console (xbox360, PS3), all requiring network bandwidth. Also, my wife and I are heavy online-gamers.
What I don't want to see is my bandwidth getting creamed due to my Vudu using my bandwidth to act as a peer-2-peer. I had not read anything about the peer-2-peer scenario before I purchased it.

I do understand that while watching a movie, I will impact my bandwidth, but when we are not using the device, I would expect it to work sort of like my tivo and only use a small amount of bandwidth as it checks for updates periodically and then perhaps throttle up when it has a big update to grab (usually at some off-peak hour).

Please help me to better understand this situation and how the Vudu is likely to impact my network. (We have comcast cable and hit speeds of between 6 and 8 meg)

    Regards,
    --Eryk

Re: Just bought my VUDU and now a bit nervous from some of what I've read...

The Vudu uses 2 Mbps of download when watching SD movies and 4 Mb/sec when watching HD movies.

At other times for updates, it uses between 300 kbps and 1 Mbps depending on the size of the database updates. Right now my box is receiving this weeks database at around 400 kbps. This is pretty typical. Networks that can support HD streaming download the database a little faster than those who cannot.

Upload usage is typically a maximum of around 300 kbps. How often this happens depends on your box and where it fits into the peering network. For example, my box is receiving database updates but it is also simultaneously sending them out to others. So my upstream usage is about 300 to 400 kbps today. However, there are days that go by where the usage is ZERO from my box. Also, I have 2 Vudus so my upstream numbers are higher. If you have content on your box that someone rents or purchases and your box is selected as a peer, you will see your box use around 300 kbps for a short period of time - maybe 15 to 20 minutes.

The bottom line is that Greg and company at Vudu have worked VERY hard to make sure the box is as unobtrusive on your network as possible. Believe me, I've been testing this box since Feb of 2007 and network stability and usage has been one of the biggest things we have tested and that Vudu has tried to minimize. I think they've done a very good job.

That makes me feel a little better then as it doesn't sound like it will eat into my bandwidth too much.

I still think that if this information (about vudu being peer-2-peer) is not available on the box or website in the normal areas people hit when purchasing, that it should be. The most I could find on the website is this bit here: "VUDU employs a unique distributed network model that enables cost-effective and efficient delivery of movies to each home". That is not clear.
In essence, Vudu is using each and every one of our networks to support its customer base. I'm not saying this is a bad thing - just something that should be made clear to a customer at the time of purchse. I pay for my Internet connection. I pay for my Vudu. I pay for my movies via Vudu. Vudu doesn't pay me to cover the bandwidth it "borrows" to support its clients - so bottom line is I'm paying to help support the infrastructure of the Vudu experience.
Again - not a huge deal to me (as long as it does not interfeer with the status quo at my house) but something that I really think should be made clear to all potential users.

      Just my two cents.

        That's kinda interesting.

In my situation where I only rent, does that mean I only have content that others could use during my 24 Hr viewing period? So lot's of times, I might not have anything to share with anybody?

I'm guessing your statement also suggests that even if I have content to share, that if it's only uploading for 15 to 20 minutes, it's not uploading the whole movie from my box?

I have 36 devices on my gigabit network, including two VUDUs. I have no bandwidth problems from the VUDU. But I also have 30mbs down/5mbs up. if I only had a 768kbs up connection I might be concerned, but even still, as long as your router has QOS and is provisioned properly you wouldn't have any problems.

From what i've seen the content is still there. i've rental a couple of titles for a second time a few weeks after the initial rental period. The VUDU box didn't need to download it again. The content was still there on the box.

              Hello Eryk,

              Welcome to VUDU!

I can tell you a bit about what to expect from your box as you unpack it, network-wise: the first few days the box will be using more bandwitdh than average. When I say more, it still isn't anywhere near your 6-8 Mbps limit (btw, I have the same service plan from Comcast). The first phase is because your box will be "catching up" with the rest of the network. You'll be happy this phase uses more bandwidth: we've heard from customers that the initial phase should go faster, so we cranked up the rates.

After that, you will see sporadic traffic at a much lower rate as we ingest new content (software, database, movies, etc...). You can think of it as a trickle.

Note that there is a settings page where you can select one of 3 levels of bandwidth usage. I'm always at the highest level, but you can select whichever level you feel comfortable with.

              Cheers!

Thanks for that tidbit aaronwt. I wasn't sure if NA9D would cache the meaning of my question on his 250MB drive or not.

Thanks Greg for the great explanation from the horse's mouth. Hope to see you and other VUDU people post more good stuff like that.

                Best Regards

Yes, rented content stays on your box for serving to others.

There's a lot of information out there already on this both here on the forums, on reviews, blogs, etc. I think it's pretty well explained as much as the average, non-technical person really would understand it.

You won't really notice the box on your network. That's pretty much the bottom line.

If you use VoIP phone service, there's some things we can do to help make sure that doesn't have any problems as far as traffic management goes.
