Vudu almost here - need some preperation help

My Vudu is scheduled to arrive around Wednesday and I need to prepare myself for what is to come. From reading posts on the forums, some of which have various answers, I figured I'd list my couple of questions here and see if any of you experts could answer them.

    1) My living room is downstairs - my wireless router is upstairs. I currently have my xbox360, PS3, Wii and Tivo all working wirelessly with no issues. Since the Vudu does not come with built in wireless, I need a bridge of some sort. I spoke to someone on the tech line (really nice guy) and he suggested a "Game" router/bridge, not a standard one. The wireless router I have is a Linksys Wireless G Broadband Router. Does anyone have a suggestion of a wireless Game bridge that should work with this router?

    2) The day I get the Vudu - will I be able to use it right away? I have read a lot about software updates and catalog downloads and am not sure where that leaves me on my potential delievery day.

    3) any tips, tricks or anything else you want to share with a newbie?

    Thanks all!

After you get the Vudu box setup search for "BOURNE" and then purchase the first 2 HD titles (they're free). Be careful not to purchase the SD copies, as they will cost you some bucks. These 2 movies will give you something to play with right away to tweak your A/V system components for optimum performance.

Also keep in mind to use only HDMI if possible. The component output of VUDU is 480p only.

I would suggest not to buy a gaming adpater. Lots of folks have problems with them with the VUDU box due to the heavy load it puts on the device. I would suggest that you geta Linksys GS router and re-flash the firmware with Tomato and run in "Client" mode. In this mode you can have one device connect as if it was wired into your router and no WDS required.

Here is the link to Linksys you need to use in this configuration:

        http://www.amazon.com/Linksys-WRT54G...9419815&sr=1-2

You wont find this at BestBuy they only carry the "G" version and for Tomato and other 3rd party firmwares to really work you need the need the "GS". I know that Frys and Tiger Direct also stocks this router.

To get the firmware go to this site:

        http://www.polarcloud.com/tomato

Let me know if you have any questions.

Yes. The new "Instant Update" feature of firmware 1.4 should be fully functional. It should download all the new content while going through the initial guided setup. We've not had anyone report how this worked for them. It would be good to have feedback from customers on it as we've only tested it under beta test conditions.

Thanks for this information!! Glad I didn't get a game adapter after all. The problem with your suggestion though is that my Vudu should be here tomorrow. If I order something (instead of going to Best Buy), I wont have it for days (and not for the weekend for sure).
Can a normal wireless bridge work or do they have the same issues as the game adapters?

            thanks,

Excellent! I will make sure to post how I find this feature worked.

RonV knows which is the best bridge available to purchase when in Best Buy.

Myself, I use the Sonos wireless bridge and found it to work great. I believe they are available at BestBuy stores (although a little pricey).

Well I know that other routers have client bridge and WDS modes. I am not sure how they will perform with the VUDU with "Stock" firmware. I would stay with a trustworthy brand like Linksys and take it back if it doesn't work well with the VUDU. Let me know what you have decided to buy and how it works out. Also if you need help with configuration just post something here or send me a private message.

                  -Ron

You might want to try a Powerline adapter as well.

Re: Vudu almost here - need some preperation help

Thanks for the help again everyone (this is one of the friendliest and helpful forum I've ever been on).
I'll go with Linksys (since I've always used them) and see what happens.

No laughing at this -but - I can't use a powerline one. All the outlets in my router room are used up and all the outlets within a reasonable distance to my tv in my living room are used up (with power strips even)...We have too much electronic stuff (if there can be such a thing)

Wait a second. You'll need an outlet at the AV center for your wireless access point/bridge. So there you can use the Powerline adapter no problem. So now we have just the router room. I'm sure you could find a way to get one more AC outlet free...

Nah, they are on their own circuit breakers and I'm an engineer and know how much load my 20 A circuit will handle!
