This is huge for APPLE...could be make or break for many of the on-demand services! Come on VUDU don't APPLE rule the world (or at the least the living room).

It has been an even playing field for VOD. Is this going to change or will VUDU and other services also get the same deal?
IF not this will give Apple a huge advanatge over the competition.
And I certainly have no desire to get an ATV.

Yes they are. Vudu has had same day purchase available since day 1. You guys have all fallen for the Apple Reality Distortion Field or RDF.

What everyone wants and what no one, including Apple has is same day RENTALS as DVD release. iTunes does not have this.

The only edge iTunes has is that their movies are cheaper: $14.99 compared to $19.99. I would give at least part of that pricing structure to be that Apple makes most of its money on hardware sales. Vudu makes most of its money on sales of movies. Because Apple will sell far more AppleTVs this year than Vudu, they can make a lot less margin on their movie sales.

Anyhow, Vudu movies are better in quality, IMHO..

And this is not Apple seling HD movies either. This is all SD content. None of the SD content on iTunes is DolbyDigital. It's all stereo only. So is DD for a lot of the SD content worth the extra 5 buck on Vudu? Probably. I know people who spend 5 bucks on Jamba Juice or Starbucks...

Re: Apple to Release Movies Same Day as DVD Release

I've had my VUDU for just over 4 months now, and I for one happen to think $5.00 is a world of difference, and one VUDU will have to overcome if they are going to survive. I find it difficult to believe people are actually *buying* new releases on VUDU for 20 bucks (I know some must be doing it, but I question their sanity). These people are either so incredibly eager to see a movie they missed in the theater that they're willing to drop $20 on, or it's a movie they LOVED and felt they had to own and add to their movie library -- however neither case makes much sense to me. Why risk $20 on something you may very well hate (I'll come back to this in a moment), or why pay $20 to add something to your "library" of favorite movies when you can usually buy the movie -- in its physical form -- from Amazon for substantially less. Not to mention that when you buy the DVD, you (A) have a physical copy (which, materialistic or not, people love to have in a "library" of any sort... you won't find people bragging about their VUDU video library, saying "hey, look how long it takes me to scroll down through all of my movies") and (B) those versions have all the extras/commentaries/etc that come with the DVD/BD.

There's a reason Amazon/iTunes/etc. only charge 8 or 9 bucks for a digital copy of a new album release when the physical version costs a good bit more -- it's because you're getting less. When you buy a music CD, you're getting two things: 1) the digital music and 2) all the accompanying packaging, etc. Likewise when you buy a DVD, you're getting what VUDU gives you (the digital form) but you're also getting a LOT more in addition. Literally, you can rip the DVD and have a (non-copyright protected) digital version. But wait -- it's actually cheaper to buy the DVD? I don't get it.

Here's the thing: if the "purchase" option on VUDU (which, again, gives you a restricted-use, digital-only, version of the product) were at a discount (like just about every other digital-only products are), I would be willing to take the risk of buying a movie I had never seen: No Country for Old Men got amazing reviews, did well at the Oscars, so there's a pretty good chance I'm going to really enjoy the movie. I don't really want to wait a month to see it. Pay 14.99 to watch it now? Yeah, I'd probably do that. Sure, it would probably only cost about $5 to rent at Blockbuster, so if I end up hating the movie, chalk it up as a $10 cost of being an early adopter of a new technology and the convenience of never having to leave my living room. But I can assure you that for $20 a pop, I'm *never* going to make this jump. Hell, No Country is for sale -- the actual physical version -- for $14.99 from Amazon. Why in the world would I pay $20 for a watered-down, digital only version that I can't really do much with?

If the "fair value" of music albums in digital-only form is $8.99, I'd say the fair value of digital movies will end up being closer to 12.99. Apple, at least, is making their way in that direction. And VUDU, if they're smart, must too.

Re: Apple to Release Movies Same Day as DVD Release

Of course the pricing issue for me would be completely moot if everything could be rented. I have no desire to purchase movies. I only purchase a movie now if I really want to watch it and don't feel like waiting for it to become rentable. Then I just delete them. I just view the extra high price as a convenience charge. Since Vudu is all about convenience for me, I'm ok with it until the rental availability improves.

To be fair it is illegal to rip a DVD, even if you own that DVD. But for me I don't buy DVDs(except for that rare one like Stargate SG1: The Ark of Truth)
I know I have no desire to rip a DVD. Even if you offered me free DVDs for life I wouldn't want them.

I also don't buy CDs. LAst year was the last time I said I wouldbuy a CD and it was really a few yeras too late. All I would do is rip the music and listen to that on my Zuneor Squeezebox. So buying the CD does me no good. All I need is the digital copy. And I don't need the storage space for it.

Your second point is well taken, but the first is largely MAFIAA (MPAA/RIAA) propaganda. Whether fair use includes format shifting is a legally gray yet ethically clear area; if you've paid for media, you can use it for your individual, personal use however you want. Obviously, that would preclude sharing or exhibiting, which is even more murky, but if you're the only person watching/listening, then by definition there is no possible profit deprivation or illegal redistribution.

Of course, the industry groups hurl mountains of money at huge teams of lawyers to dispute this, and in some cases it works. But I hope not too many people fall for their obfuscation. While I would never make a copy of someone else's work and sell it, I format shift with a clear conscience.

This is from a NY Times blog:

Warner Brothers To Rent Movies Online Sooner

                      By Saul Hansell
There was good news for Apple and Comcast, but bad news for Blockbuster woven into Time Warner?s conference call with investors today.
Jeff Bewkes, Time Warner?s chief executive, said that the company?s Warner Brothers studio will now release movies for video-on-demand systems on the same day they are released as DVDs.

Agreed. That headline is part of the Apple RDF.

And Warner Brothers has been releasing movies for purchase AND RENTAL on DVD release day for several months now on VUDU!

VUDU was first to market with this but Vudu doesn't have an RDF around it's office complex.

There is another way of looking at this whole discussion. If you and your wife or girl friend or whatever go to the theatre to see a movie you would almost pay the price of a DVD times two to see that movie. How many times have you gone to see a movie and didn't like it? No different than buying one and not liking it only it didn't cost as much. And, I don't know about anybody else but when we go to the movies all the goodies at the "Snack Bar" far exceed the cost of admission !!

I, like everyone else, have no desire to own a DVD except for the really good ones like "Lord of the Rings", "Indiana Jones" and a couple others. I really subscribed to VUDU for the rental and I couldn't see buying an ATV with all the other junk they have on it that I don't want.
