    48 Hour Rental Period

Like most people, I would love to see a 48 hour rental period. I also understand this is an industry issue, not a Vudu issue. In other words, if Vudu could offer it then it would but the big, bad, mean 'people' in the movie industry only want you to have 24 hours, no more, no less. For me, that reduces the number of movies I rent from Vudu significantly - probably by 80%. OK, you have heard enough - this subject is well documented well beyond its shelf life...

So, here is my band-aid solution for Vudu. Vudu should offer both a 24 and 48 hour rental period. The 24 hour period should be the regular price and the 48 hour period should be the 24 hour rate plus their cost of a 24 hour period. For example, if they charge $3.99 for a movie and the cost is $1.50 then the 24 hour period is $3.99 but a 48 hour period is $3.99 plus $1.50 = $5.49.

Since I really have no idea what the cost is I am guessing on the figures above. Maybe it makes sense, maybe it doesn't. What it does, though, is gives us an option for 48 hour watching period (problem -> solution). What it does for Vudu is allows them to offer something other's don't. Plus, Vudu can count the second 24 hour period as a full rental and maybe get their overall costs down with higher rental volumes (again, I am not sure what their contracts look like but I assume the move they sell the cheaper their costs).

Granted this may be a goofy idea. But what the hell, it's an idea.

I think an idea like this has a lot of merit. It's a great suggestion we'll have to run by marketing. It's pretty good - get an extension to the movie for 50% more cost. I don't know if I'd want to choose between a 24 hour rental and a 48 hour rental. What if I paid the extra and then watched the movie in one sitting? Then I'd feel ripped off. Maybe that extra cost could be added if you wanted to have another 24 hours after the first 24 expired...

We'll make sure to suggest this!

    Keep these ideas coming guys!

... or maybe if I rent it again within X days (7 days??), the cost is discounted.

Good idea. We'll pass this on to the marketing/feature teams. Here's what I see you saying:

        - Rent a movie and start watching.
        - 24 hours later the movie expires.
        - If you re-rent the same movie w/in 7 days you can then pay a discount (say 50% or whatever) to rent the movie for another 30 days with 24 hours once you start watching it again.

This sound good to you? We'll pass this on.

Yep, that sounds like a good idea to me. This idea is predicated on the fact that they are making money on rentals (again, I don't know their cost structure). Subsequent rentals should be at a much reduced cost (IMO it should be AT cost). Again, it won't really work if the cost of the second rental period isn't discounted much.

It's definitely a good compromise. Although ideally a 30 hour rental period would be best if the content providers would just do some research.

Correct, my idea is just a band-aid until the movie rental period problem is fixed.

I wouldn't say its a problem but an short sighted issue imposed by the content owners.

I think this is a great way to get around the situation at the moment. Bravo.

One a different note but one I feel is within the idea of this thread - I heard from Comcast (from a manager friend) that Comcast is looking into a deal with studios where they will be possibly offering movies for digital rent the same day they are released in the theater. That's right - in the theater. That's not a mistake. The price point would be quite higher (guess are at around $40 at the moment) - but what I think this brings to the table is what the future of digital content could be. How does this tie to this thread? Well, I believe that if Comcast is in the works on something like this, then the movie studios are opening their eyes more and more to the digital delivery systems which should benefit us all. I'd love to see Vudu being able to give us 48 hour rental periods, all movies released on the day they hit DVD and, eventually, the ability to rent a movie the day it hits the theater.
We live in exciting times my friends.

Comcast's same day rental is actually a purchase. Your "rent" the movie on your box for say $20.00. Two days later, the DVD arrives in the mail. That's how they do it.

Never heard of that, but its not what I was talking about. They are working a deal to release a movie digitally the same day it hits theaters. Totally different program then what you are talking about.

Other countries seem to be able to get bootleg copies of movies even before they're released to theatres. Wonder how they do that?

Somebody records a video of the screening...and then its sent out all over the place. I remember at a sneak peak of Narnia went to they were watching the audience all the time. Making sure that nobody was illegally capturing the content.

That's a good explanation. I was thinking more along the lines of corporate theft from the cutting room, or something like that.
