Previews -TOO SHORT - No chance to hook user

Whoever thought up the 2 minute preview time span was both genius and an idiot. I'm a newer vudu user and thought the idea of a short preview was great until I tried it on multiple offerings.

2 minutes as it's currently set up seems to usually include a good full minute of the studios obligatory lead in with trademark images etc... Then you have the intro credits for whatever movie and by the time it's all said and done you really only have 5-15 seconds of movie preview if you're lucky.

The idea of a short initial preview is great and if done correctly can be used as a tool to HOOK users that were potentially on the fence for a purchase or rental.

In the end...this 2 minute preview thing is USELESS. That said, I'm not going to criticise without giving some suggestions to help resolve the issue:
    1) Start the 2 minutes AFTER the bloody opening credits, or
    2) Bump it up from 2 minutes to 5 minutes or something similar.

Per our contracts, the allotted time for the 2 minute preview is selected by the studio. However, VUDU has on-going discussions with each of the major motion picture studios to continuously improve our service and user experience. We'll pass this request on to the proper people for you.

They have been using two minute previews at hotels for many, many years. The content holders are the ones that set these restrictions.

Actually, what about just moving the 2 minute preview to another point in the movie? It's still a 2 minute preview, but perhaps it could be a random point, or 1 minute into the movie to prevent spoilers?

This is less to show you the movie and more for you to check out the technical quality before paying- to make sure it plays correctly, and is transferred with the proper aspect ratio and sound as some titles aren't (some older titles don't have 5.1 sound even when they were produced that way, some 2.35 movies are cropped to 16x9 and some 4x3 movies are stretched.) Amazon VOD doesn't let you do this- I've paid extra for HD from them on a few titles only to find my internet service won't support it, and their system automatically switches you to SD when that happens. Better to be able to test out the first 2 minutes to see what your system can handle.

In case you are curious... the 2 minute preview length is mostly about "fair use" for royalties. Movies usually have very complicated royalty agreements with the various actors, writers, musicians, etc, involved, and showing more than ~2 minutes would trigger those. Extending the preview window would involve renegotiating contracts with so many misc. people it would be a nightmare.

You may have noticed that we are starting to offer 10 minute previews for some new releases, though! That's because the studios have realized previews are an important tool for streaming movies and have secured the rights to do it up front. Hopefully many new movies will have these longer previews in the future...
