    Re: Downloading

Mine is sucking and spitting. Has been since Friday night. One thing I notice, when downloading, the activity stops when I power up the unit, but when uploading the activity continues and I can see it on the bandwidth screen.

Correct. This was an added feature in 1.4.

Also, if you have a router that is SNMP compliant, you can get a program like PRTG (www.paessler.com) that will graph your traffic. Below is mine live.

The green is my outbound traffic. I generally know what's going on on my network be it ReplayTV, Mozy or if all else fails Vudu. I usually know what's doing what..

The moderators know better than I do.

But I stumbled across a screen the other day in the VUDU settings in Bandwidth Options that appears to show the realtime upload and download bandwidth being used by VUDU.

Also since it uploads "and" downloads, I think it might actually being spitting and sucking bandwidth, not just sucking.

The box uses network traffic for a variety of reasons. Since you pulled the most recent database update, your box may be helping to seed others the new database. So your upload traffic will come and go as the box needs it. It won't generally take more than 300 kbps upload traffic at max. Generally it will be around 100k or so. How much does it use the network? A fair amount. I would say that there's probably something going on between 40 and 50 percent of the time - receiving a movie, receiving the database, seeding others with the database or sending chunks of a movie to someone.

It's quite unobtrusive. Just let it sit there and play and all will be happy!

BTW: WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF VUDU!

Welcome to the board. Can you clarify what 'sucking bandwidth' is?

When a new VUDU is setup and depending on the software version the catalog is either updated during the setup process and then the additional content "Movie Posters", is downloaded in the back ground, or the entire catalog is updated in the background which takes about 36 hours to update.

The VUDU is always "connected" and receiving updates. The updates are designed to have a minimal impact on your network.

How much bandwidth is it "sucking up"? My guess is somewhere around 500K or so.

The box is updating its database. New database updates are sent out on Thursday/Friday/Sat or so. This contains next weeks new releases, etc. Plus as a new user, you probably experienced the "instant update" feature. This new feature pulls down all the movie files but the artwork, previews, and posters for all the movies takes a while and will be coming down over the next couple of days.

So the box is going to use bandwidth on and off. It will use some of the next 2 or 3 days.

Is it a problem? If you have enough bandwidth to stream in HD or even SD, you won't notice the box's affect on your network at all.
