New member here, couple of HD rental ??'s

Ok, I currently own a BD player and enjoy them a lot. I've also considered how convinient a download player maybe, and from some reading here it appears the HD movies on Vudu compare to say HBO HD?(which does not look bad)

One of my concerns is availability of HD rentals. Is this still a buiding service, or can one be certain that any new major release is going to be HD?

Currently, if I really like a movie(iron man for example), I buy it on BD. I use Netflix for all other DVD and BD rentals. Im considering using vudu as a rental sub, but only if the new releases are on HD and timely. Can someone give me some input?

    thanks.

Right now, Vudu has something like 125 HD titles for rent. I wish I could say that every new release is coming out in HD but I cannot. It depends on the studio. Lionsgate seems to be the one in the lead here and I may venture to say that every new Lionsgate release is also in HD. The other studios are running behind.

I expect this situation to change rapidly over time.

In terms of the HD quality, it is very, very good. Now as good as BluRay but very good nonetheless. You'd be happy with it and you'd also be happy with the SD content as well.

Additionally, Vudu has some older releases in HD that will probably never make it into BR.

That said, is Vudu right for you? It may be if you want faster service than something like Netflix provides. But OTOH, Netflix does allow quicker rental of new releases as physical media doesn't need to wait for the 30 day window like most digital sources before you can rent.

Here's what I suggest - buy the box. You have 30 days to check it out and decide if you like it. If you do, great. If you don't then simply return it and perhaps buy it again later in 6 months when there is more HD content...

Thanks. I stay 45 days behind on my rentals anyways, so the delay would not kill me.

I need to sort out a broadband situation (currently only using an evdo card) and then consider this.

If all you can get is broadband via EVDO then Vudu is not right for you. First of all just about all the EVDO providers are now implementing a 5 Gig per month cap on usage. That will basically be filled up with about 1 HD movie. And you won't be able to stream HD in real time anyhow on an EVDO connection nor will you likely be able to stream SD in real time either.

Nah, I use evdo for work on my laptop, but Ive considered adding Cox HSI. I can get 1.5mbps for $26/mo

Uh, get higher than 1.5 if you want to get Vudu and stream. You need at least 2 Mbps. 4 Mpbs for HD.

I doubt id stream, being Id ONLY use this connection for the vudu box, its not worth it to get the $50 HSI. I usually watch movies on sat and sun night, so giving it time to download would not be an issue.

Well, OK then. It's a completely different experience having to wait vs. having instant streaming. I've done both and I prefer the second. An SD movie would be watchable in roughly 45 minutes to an hour at that speed and an HD movie in about 60 to 90 minutes.

I have 1.5mb also. Not by choice but it's the only option in my area.

I rented Before The Devil Knows You're Dead yesterday to watch later tonight and I think when I did that it indicated it would take approx 1 Hour and some change to download it.

I agree the instant viewing is a nice feature, but I find doing it this way is completly acceptable and much better than renting from Netflix. I would be willing to wait even longer if I could get the bitrate jacked up some.

I rented National Treasure II from Netflix the other day because they offer it in HD/DD5.1 and VUDU doesn't. But even though it only takes a day or two to get the movie from Netflix by mail, the status of the movie is their infamous "Short Wait" before they can mail it. So I have no idea when I'll actually get it to watch.

Yep. We're in Sacramento now and heading for Oregon next month.

It's really weird, I can get high speed DSL in the Siuslaw National Forest in Oregon from the local telco provider there, but I can't get anything faster than 1.5mb from ATT here in Sacramento. It's in a fairly rural area, but from our place here when we walk up to the top of levee, we can see the skyline of downtown Sacramento. It really sucks.

I've never seen the skyline of downtown Sacramento, but I can't believe it is that bad.

Don't show it to me, and keep your subjunctive clause in your pants ! However, my brother is a doctor and I could ask him to look at it for you.
