    Varying quality?

    Howdy all,
First off, I have to say that the wife and I are loving the Vudu . Aside from only a couple of movies (one of which this thread is about), the quality has been either good or even better than expected. The question I have about quality is this: Should I expect the same quality from movie to movie as long as I am comparing the same formats? (meaning Standard to standard and high to high?).
We watched the new Alien's vs. Predator (standard def) and it was full of video artifacts. The compression on that video appeared to be horrible to the point of making it an unpleasent viewing experience. There were many times where, in the darkness of the film, we could not even tell what was happening.
When we watch a standard def dvd, we do not see a single ring of color banding or flicker of compression artifacts so I know it is not our Plasma tv having issues with the "darker scenes" in a movie in general. I understand that the movies on Vudu are digital with compression, but I tell you what - this Aliens vs. Predator movie was way worse than any other compressed SD movie we have seen. Most other SD movies we have watched (and I can't for the life of me remember any to give examples at the moment) were decent. Very limited banding or artifacts - so I was wondering - is the Aliens vs. Predator movie just an anomoly (sp?) or can the quality of Vudu movies really vary greatly?

    Regards and Happy Vudu-ing!!!

    Re: Varying quality?

My guess is that Alien vs. Predator has a larger amount of low light, low detail scenes, which the compression seems to have the most problems with. If the places in the movie that were well lit and had a lot of detail looked like you expected, that would seem to back that up.

AVP Requiem has a lot of dark scenes so you can definitely see the compression there as opposed to a movie that takes place during the day or with a lot of light. Unfortunately, that's the nature with compression and dark scenes.

This was much worse than just the nature of dark scenes (or I sure as heck hope it is much worse and not what I can expect).

My question still stands though - is the Aliens vs. Predator movie just an anomoly (sp?) or can the quality of Vudu movies really vary greatly?

However, what you said John, brings a question to light - if this truely IS the nature of dark scenes, then why even rent a darker movie in the first place? Goodbye horror movies, see you later sci-fi. Because I, for one, will get annoyed very quickly if I see this as a trend on those sorts of movies and my use of Vudu will drop if not stop completely. That AvP movie really and truely was not watchable. I feel like I wasted my money on it. If this is how these movies go, then perhaps a warning on the information screen for the movies would be a smart thing - something to let us know - STOP - this movie contains many dark scenes and as such could be hard to view due to compression limitations.
I'm not trying to sound like a jerk but if I had rented this movie as a dvd from Netflix or a rental store, I'd have brought it back as defective and asked for a credit. Just because a movie is streaming digital does not mean I should expect a less-than-viewable quality.

I hope what I am saying makes sense and I am not coming off in a bad light here because I really do love my Vudu.

I rented the film on my box and I do see what you are talking about. There is much more compression on this title than others that I have seen and it definitely takes away from the movie experience. I sent you an email regarding the issue.

I rented and watched this movie last week from DTV in HD/DD5.1. I didn't experience any of these problems stated here, so I have to conclude that it's either the source that is being encoded or the compression setting.

If it can be attributed to compression then "I want more bits in my bucket" !!!!

It's possible that Vudu's source material is not so good as well...

I'd blame the encoding. I doubt source material could be that bad.
