What you screw in the light bulb? I thought you just held the bulb and let the earth's rotation screw it in for you?

That's a fairly common belief. But that actually only works south of the equator (i.e. Australia).

North of the equator, all you can do is un-screw a light bulb using that technique.

Every "Smarter than the the Average" Pollack knows that!!!

        Re: Vodka, Fishing and Dynamite!

I'll probably regret jumping into this, but here we go.

This global rotation light bulb replacement technique would only work at the North Pole, and only for light fixtures suspended from the North Star or some other relatively fixed location device that is not geo-stationary.

South Pole fixtures would come in handy for removing dead bulbs. In either location, you would still have to resort to some other pollack system to complete the "change a light bulb" mission.

Explanation for Hodge: Imagine you are facing the North Pole. The sun is setting in the West, which is always to your left. Therefore, your direction of motion is to the East. Now, watch a light bulb that is being screwed in (easier if you are holding the bulb, not lifting the ladder), and you will see that the direction of motion, relative to the axis of the socket is to the right/EAST.

I guess you have never seen the Foucalult pendulum exhibits at the many science museums that are definitely at non-polar latitudes:

          http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foucault_pendulum

In these exhibits, the pendulum is hung by a nearly frictionless bearing from the roof. It continues to swing in a nearly stationary pattern but the rotation of th Earth causes it to knock down pegs around a circle at the bottom. Clearly the roof "rotates" with respect to the stationary pendulum at any latitude other than the equator, though it does so in a slower fashion the farther you move away from the pole.

Which pole are you talking about?? Me or You?? It may go slower the farther you go, but the air is fresher! Maybe that's where the phrase "Move slowly away from the Pole" came from.

Actually, Ed, if you are in a position where you are able to face the north pole every other direction is SOUTH. Also, the North Pole is pretty much either in 24 hour daylight or 24 hour night for most of the year. There is very little time when there's a sunset at the North Pole.

Anyone know if the Polish Team has been selected yet or not to represent us at the Summer Olympics for the Pole Vaulting Event??
