VuDu-Great Concept but Needs Some Work

I love the concept of the VUDU Disc to Digital service and appreciate that it is a bit of a start up and is working through some growing pains. I have posted approximately 300 movies on VUDU and am excited at the prospect of the site maturing and expanding.

I am a professional in the feature film production business and all things considerd think the HDX format works well as a high end viewing format. The support has also been great, people are friendly and try to be helpful. So all in all a decent start to start to a very promising future.

However, I am very frustrated about some issues that need to be reviewed and improved quickly or I fear this site may have longer term issues as soon as another more organized competitor comes on line.

    Below are list of suggestions.

    a) The site will not print your full lists of loaded movies to be digitzied beyond one page (23 entries). This has been an annoying issue for me and really unacceptable considering the available sophistication of even a basic database program that is very prevelent in today's marketplace for similar listing needs.

VUDU also needs a better tie in to Walmart and printing these lists as well. Currently, if you cannot pre-print your list before taking it into Walmart (as stated above), the Walmart rep needs to write BY HAND each entry? Really? I bought in 160 entries and had to wait to for this to be written out one by one when a simple print out option of my pre-entered list would have only taken a few minutes. Walmart told me that although they saw my pre-entered list on their computer there is no way to print them out and they have to be hand written. Huh?

    b) I have seen others have commented on this next issue. Not being able to sort your list or reorganize the order of your movies etc once on line is really ridiculous. They should buy something like the "CollectorZ" database and apply it to this program. For a professional service that is owned by Walmart and marketed so heavily to the public it is a bit mind blowing that something like even a basic sorting is not in place.

    c) Pricing. Well, on one hand the pricing is reasonable for the service however on the other hand, it is frustrating that they do not offer some type of volume discount as I have spend a ridiculous amount of money to put as much as my library on line as possible and no discount for volume purchases?

    d) If you submit a film in SD you should be available to upgrade it to HDX at any time for an additional $3 dollars as when initially submitted and not pay an extra $10 plus dollars as is currently in place. Makes no sense? You are also financially penalized if VUDU has not made an arrangement with a studio for an HDX release even if you own a BlueRay version at the time and want to post.. as again, when you upgrade to the higher rez version instead of paying $3 you have to pay an additional $10 plus dollars as the dvd is already stamped.

    e) Lastly, I think it would be reasonable if VUDU allowed you to upload digital titles from your own personal library that are not yet available on the service so your entire digital library could all be located in one place. I realize there might be "bigger picture" studio issues with this concept but still feel it could be viable and a huge additional consumer option that no other service could touch.

    Hope that helps.

Re: VuDu-Great Concept but Needs Some Work

This is an excellent post! I agree with everything you wrote. I just started my VUDU library about 8 months a go and have 147 movies on "my vudu". Some i want to upgrade to HDX, but i don't want to pay full price for HDX, when i already paid for the SD. At the very least they should charge you the difference between the HDX price and the SD price.

The lack of a "sort" feature on "my vudu" is inexcusable. To try and manage 147 movies and not be able to sort them seems ridiculous in this age of technology. They should offer the same sort features that they have in the "Browse" tab.
