    Re: External Hard Drive

A lot of folks thought that S3 was discontinued, but it was just sold out and, if I recall, there was a shortage of some components.

Here is a link that seems to say that Tivo did intend to phase it out:

      and another:

So at least I wasn't making crazy s##t up.

The S3 is available from the Tivo website.

There's some distinct differences between the S3 and HD models. The S3 has some advantages, the HD others.

What are the advantages of the HD, other than price? Looking at the Tivo website, it looks like the features of the S3 are a superset of the HD.

The HD can accept handle Multi-Stream cable cards properly. This means you can use one card for both tuners. The S3 will accept multi-stream cards but you'll need two of them.

The HD uses a 64 bit file system as compared to the 32 bit file system on the S3. Therefore, the HD technically can have a much larger storage capacity. Right now this is not meaningful but it could be some day.

That day is coming next month when Seagate releases their 1.5TB drives.

Tivo Series 3 to disappear, replaced by HD

More speculation on the disappearance of the Tivo 3. This one seems compellingly true:

Well, going to the Tivo site and casually browsing, I see nothing referring to the Series 3...
