Yea but the part that I don't understand is why they feel the need to spread the content between so many different services. If it's all available then why can't each service have access to it all?

It's like the studios are TRYING to make it difficult for people to pay to see their content. Maybe I'm thinking about it all wrong but if you want people to buy your product then you have to make it readily accessible right?

Well I think they are trying to keep one player from becoming dominate in the market. It is a dumb move from a consumers point of view.

Interesting. But why have differing numbers of types of encodes for different services. For example why does Vudu have over 6,000 total movies compared to ATV's 1500 or so, while ATV has 500+ HD movies to Vudu's 200 or so? Who is making that decision? The studio or the receiving company? That must be a strategy decision by each device maker. I'm also confused on who exactly is doing the specific encodes for each service- I've heard it both ways but I don't know what the truth is.

The studios are parsing out movies slowly in general to placate their longstanding relationships with DVD and blu-ray makers. Would be interesting to see what happens if a long-time DVD maker comes out with a VOD device- would the studios favor them with more and quicker downloads.

Its already happening. Sony has the PS3 which is VOD capable with the latest software update and they are a DVD manufacturer.

But it can backfire on Sony too. Perhaps, studios aren't going to be willing to deal with Playstation Network because Sony owns movie studios itself. It's just a big mess...

I saw the story yesterday about the new LG blu-ray/netflix box and then I started thinking about what would the movie studio's have to benefit by providing netflix (eventually) with HD encodes? If you look at the Vudu or ATV or others as a business model it makes some sense for the studios- they make a master in whatever format for whatever device and then they get some percentage of an inflated rental fee time and time again.

But with netflix's subscription model the studios would make zilch. Netflix survives b/c the studios can't control what happens to their discs once netflix buys them and they get the revenue at least from the purchase of the physical discs. But with subscription model to online viewing the studios aren't making anything.

Anyway, just a long rant that makes me wonder if Netflix streaming will ever have HD content or anything more than catalogue content. Why would the studios provide it to them?

                Thoughts?

I would imagine that the studios get more than the purchase price of the physical disks from Netflix (at least the retail price that you or I pay). It's not like you or I can start buying disks at Walmart and start our own rental business.

I'm sure they have license agreements where they either pay a large fee up front for the right to rent/distribute all of them, or some large fee per title for that right.

I'm pretty sure that Netflix pays studios separately for the content it streams through its service. That's why they can only offer such, ahem, "limited" catalog instead of new movies.
