    As of a few months ago, you could still switch to regular HD on a tv even though it's not "advertised"

    Eh...this one is tricky. YES, B5 was indeed shot in 16:9, but that is NOT the original Aspect ratio. JMS shot the show in 16x9 to 'future proof' the show, but it was originally aired in 4:3 and it was shot accordingly. JMS knew it was to air in 4:3, and just kind of "shot extra" so that it could be shown in 16:9 someday. The DVDs are all in 4:3, too. 4:3 really is the original aspect ratio.

    EDIT:

    I am mistaken: The DVDs are indeed in 16x9, but that is problematic. Honestly, the show is better in 4:3 as that was the original aspect ratio. See below:

    I know that there are a lot of Babylon 5 fans who are going to be very disappointed by the information in this section. Babylon 5 has been released in a 1.85:1 widescreen aspect ratio, anamorphically enhanced; this was the original aspect ratio that Straczynski used when filming the live action sequences.

    The computer-generated (CGI) footage is highly problematic, and for a very simple reason. While the live action footage was originally filmed in a widescreen aspect ratio, the CGI shots were rendered directly for the 4:3 aspect ratio. Instead of re-rendering the CGI footage for the new aspect ratio, Warner chose to crop and zoom in to the existing 4:3 CGI image. The result is that any scene with CGI in it looks distinctly blockier and less detailed than equivalent live-action footage: more like VHS than anything I'd expect on DVD. In addition, all the CGI scenes show major aliasing artifacts (a very noticeable shimmering effect) because of the mismatch between the rendered computer graphics and the screen's resolution. These artifacts could have been avoided by re-rendering the CGI shots for the new aspect ratio, or if the initial image had been rendered at a higher resolution to begin with. Unfortunately, Babylon 5 makes extensive use of CGI throughout both exterior and interior shots, so the lower image quality of this footage is very noticeable.

    I don't know about Sabotuer, but Mummy, Invisible Man and the other Universal films that were stretched in HDX are all correct in HD without the X.

    Widescreen TV is approximately 1.78:1. If the aspect ratio (1.85:1) is shown correctly it will still be letterboxed (black lines on top and bottom).

    I usually check IMDB for correct aspect ratios. According to that site, Splendor in the Grass has a 1.85:1 aspect ratio. So if the Vudu copy is correct it will probably fill the entire television screen with no bars.

    I just bought Splendor in the Grass and viewing it it doesn't seem as if the aspect ratio is correct. I don't know the technicalities so I can't say for sure and it is from 1961 so maybe that's how it has to be. I don't see that it has been mentioned in this thread. Had I known I probably would not have bought it.

    Fatal Attraction (HDX) still is 1.33:1 and the image is horizontally squished on Vudu. IMDB specifies 1.85:1 for this movie.

    My question is why are they doing this? The aspect ratios are just as important as the picture quality. What are they trying to do cropping the prints,trying to satisfy some 20 year old nit-wit with an xbox?
